  • Is gum pain a new symptom of COVID-19?

Hi, We are learning of new signs and symptoms being found related to the covid-19 virus. The latest Intra-oral sign is mucormycosis. This was found largely in India. I would suggest to follow the protocols set in your area and, when possible, visit your doctor/dentist. Thanks. READ MORE

  • Is bleeding after implant installation normal?

Hi, Implants are titanium screws placed into your jaw bone to replace missing teeth. As with any surgery, there is possibilities for post surgical bleeding ... although it shouldn’t be copious by a little drizzle a day later can occur. If concerned, please do visit or call your dental surgeon. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • How long should a dental implant hurt?

Hi, If you mean just post surgery? Everyone has a different pain threshold, but generally, if no bone grafting or other procedure was done simultaneously, most people are fine within a few days or a week. There are no nerve endings in bone, so pain is usually minimal. However, if bone grafting, sinus lift, etc,. was done, inflammation and pain will be present for a couple of weeks. Please understand every situation is different and your dentist can give you a better synopsis on your care. Thanks. READ MORE

  • How quickly does a cavity progress?

Hi, Teeth are made up of 3 separate layers which are distinguished on an X-ray - enamel, dentin and pulp (nerve). The outer most layer or enamel is very hard and Davy progresses very slowly (and can be halted with fluoride), but once it enters the second layer (dentin), pain can arise, sensitivity and the decay will progress faster as this layer is soft and innervated with nerves. So, possibly months and even weeks depending on diet and genetic makeup of the individual. Hope this helped!! READ MORE

  • How do you heal a deep pocket in your gums?

Hi, The first thing is to assess the cause of the pocket and its depth. If the tooth is sound with good probing depths except for one particular point, this could be a fracture, if the deep pockets are generalized, you can have periodontal disease and bone loss. If periodontal disease is present and gums bleed on brushing and flossing, you will need a dental cleaning (possibly scaling and root planing). But for general conversation, pocket depths of 1-3 mm is healthy, 4-5 mm is gingivitis and is reversible, 6mm and greater is periodontitis and you have incurred bone loss. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Will an x-ray show dental disease?

Hi, X-rays will show hard, mineralized matter ... so teeth and bone show up on X-rays. Dental disease diagnosed with X-rays will include cavities and bone loss. There are different X-rays which concentrate on different aspects - bitewings are for inter proximal cavities and possibly site specific bone level assessment, periapical look for infections and a panoramic will give a full picture to look at overall bone and and pathologies. A cbct (cone beam CT scan) will give us a 3-D view and is highly detailed. Have your dentist discuss which X-ray you will need. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • How long do crowns last on front teeth?

Hi, Crowns can last indefinitely, but generally, it’s estimated at around 5-10 years. It depends on the maintenance. If you wear a night guard (if you clench or grind), daily brushing and flossing, the preparation of the tooth - how much decay, etc., was present. Your dentist can assess your particular situation and see if any issues are present. Hope this helps! READ MORE

  • Why do teeth suddenly become sensitive?

Hi, Teeth are made up by 3 distinct layers, enamel, dentin, and the pulp. The pulp houses the nerves which traverses into the dentin. Enamel is the layer without nerves and also the hardest layer, so teeth’s protective layer. The enamel, however, is only present on the crown portion of the tooth in variable thickness. Teeth are innervated by nerves and when the free ends are exposed, sensitivity ensues. Nerves are usually exposed when enamel is lost or gums and bone recede. So, factors which can lead to this (in otherwise healthy - no decay - teeth) is acid wear, grinding, clenching, and periodontal (gum) disease. At least, these are the usual suspects. Hope this helps. • How do you prep for a cavity filling?

Hi, Dentists will usually use either drills or lasers, or even both. We need access to the cavity and depending where it is and its extent, different access points will be used. I know this is vague, but without further information, it’s very difficult to discuss. I would recommend discussing with your dentist. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Should new dentures be loose?

Hi, The obvious answer is no... However, if so, do you have adequate Jaw bone to support a denture? Also, is it the lower denture or upper? If lower, the mandible is void of any stability unlike the upper jaw, which has a biological seal which gives the stability or suction. The lower denture will always be loose and thus we recommend implants in conjunction with the lower denture. If the jaw bone is deficient, dentures will lack the support. Implants will enhance their stability. If your jaw bone is good and the teeth extractions were done 3 + months ago, but dentures are still loose, have the denturist and/or dentist do a reline, but make sure the bite and esthetics are good. Hope this helps! READ MORE

  • Is cold water bad for teeth?

Hi, I would say moderation is key! Eating ice creams and drinking hot coffee are on polar opposites, individuals should be able to enjoy both (not at the same time nor in quick succession). Our teeth have a hard outer layer, enamel, which is very strong, but rather than temperature, I would not recommend crushing ice cubes with your teeth! READ MORE

  • Can I eat chocolate after a tooth extraction?

Hi, After any dental surgery I would recommend a soft food diet, examples are mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs and pasta to name a few. I wouldn’t say soft chocolates which melt is contradictory, but if the surgery is next to sound teeth, it may be difficult to brush them...causing cavities. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Do dental implants get plaque?

Hi, Plaque will form on all structure in your mouth including implant crowns. Implants don’t get cavities, but are highly susceptible to periodontal (gum) issues! Peri-implantitis or periodontal disease around implants are a main cause for implant failures. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Is alcohol mouthwash bad for teeth?

Hi Alcohol mouthwash is not so bad for teeth but rather the oral environment. It provides temporary fresh breath but actually will dry out the mouth. So non alcohol mouthwashes are recorded. READ MORE

  • What can I eat after my first dental implant surgery?

Hi, Post-implant surgery, it’s best to stay on a soft food diet! Basically, anything you can squish with the back of a spoon or softer. Soups, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs are just some examples. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • How long does it take bone graft to heal?

Hi, Bone grafting heals at different rates depending on the bone material used. If bovine or porcine bone is used, it will take 6-9 months. If human donor bone was used, it will range from 3-6 months. If the bone used was your own, it may take between 3-4 months. Now, be aware these are just ranges and your dentist will be able to discuss this further. Hope this helped. READ MORE

  • How do you remove calculus from teeth without going to the dentist?

Hi, So, plaque is a soft biofilm which can be removed with a regular toothbrush. However, as it stays longer, it mineralizes and becomes hard and tenacious. Removal will require periodontal instruments. The technique using these instruments is critical to avoid injury. If you have tartar/calculus, I would recommend visit. Your dentist and hygienist. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Are small cavities worth filling?

Hi, So, the definition of a cavity is a hole. If the cavity is incipient and within the enamel of the tooth, you may be able to arrest it with flossing and fluoride. However, if the cavity has reached the dentin, it will spread. It is at this stage you should get it filled. Sometimes small holes within the enamel grooves can be filled as a preventative measure. Discuss your options with your dentist and make an informed decision. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • What can you do for an exposed tooth nerve?

Hi, Once the nerve is exposed you would have had pain. There really are only 2 real options - root canal or extract the tooth. Leaving the tooth with an exposed nerve without treatment would result in an infection (although no pain may be felt - as the nerve would eventually die) as the bacteria makes its way into the supporting structures such as bone. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Can tooth bonding be redone?

Hi, One of the advantages of bonding (white fillings) is the fact that it can be redone, touched up, polished, etc. Resin bonding has really come a long way. The materials are getting stronger and more esthetic (nano and micro filled). Hope this helped. READ MORE
