  • Do toothaches always mean an infection?

Not all toothaches mean an infection. Infection are diagnosed based on the signs, symptoms and an X-ray. If there is pain with hot, pressure and it keeps you up at night... these are the usual telltale symptoms of an infection. Pain can occur due to cavity, recession, grinding or clenching just to name a few . READ MORE

  • How long do I need to wear my retainer for?

After orthodontic treatment, retention is for life! Many people opt not to wear their retainers and are fine with mild teeth movements. Our teeth naturally move over time unless held in place. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • How is acupuncture an alternative treatment in dentistry?

Hi there, Very interesting! I have used acupuncture to deal with a patient’s gag reflex. Alternative medicine is interesting, but not a panacea to deal with all dental pain. Perhaps if the pin is muscular, it may help, but if tooth-related, you will need to see a dentist. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Which is better, root canal or implant?

Hello Interesting question. As health care providers we are to provide you with all the options and consequences allowing you to make the final informed decision. That being said, I personally feel if a tooth is given a fair to good prognosis I would try and keep it. However, if the prognosis is poor to guarded, and implant may make more sense. Root canals have been given a bad rap, but scientifically are sound and do work. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Is it possible to choke on the water in the dental office?

Hello, Yes, it’s a somewhat common fear. Some options to help your grandmother: the dentist can use a rubber dam or isolite system to help minimize the water in the mouth. If the anxiety borders fear, she may require sedation. The body has natural reflexes, which will obviously prevent choking. This is more a psychological issue, so reassurance is important. Have a consult with the dentist and hopefully he can create trust, showing care and empathy. I wish your grandmother well. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • What should I do with a crooked tooth?

Hi, If it is bugging you, the obvious answer is orthodontics. Braces or Invisalign may be used. The other option is to reshape the tooth if the rotation is minimal or possibly veneer, bonding, or a crown. READ MORE

  • Can drinking water prevent tooth decay?

Hello, A major source of tooth decay is sugary drinks, so cutting them out will definitely help. Many communities have incorporated fluoride into the drinking water at 1PPM to reduce decay, so this will help. Rinse your mouth after meals, brush twice daily, and floss. Keep your mouth moist by drinking water, which will also reduce the acid content. You will curtail most cavities. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • How long is a root canal treatment?

Hi, A root canal procedure is commonly completed in a single visit nowadays, however, certain issues can make it a 2-appointment procedure. Ballpark 1.5 hours for a root canal. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Is surgery a treatment for TMJ?

Hi there, TMD is usually treated with a mouth guard. Different types are available and your dentist can determine what’s best for you. Botox can help if it is muscular in nature. Anti-inflammatory and warm compress helps in conjunction with mouth guard. The last resort is surgery and it is not always successful. I would recommend conservative treatment with a guard first. Hope it helps. READ MORE

  • Why do dentists use X-rays?

Hi, Dental X-rays are paramount in diagnosis in dentistry. We use them to diagnose cavities between teeth. Use them to diagnose dental infections, etc. X-rays in cracked tooth syndrome will tell us the severity of the crack, i.e., its depth, as the bone will drop at the site. Is the tooth infected? Can we salvage the tooth.... Depending on the signs and symptoms, an X-ray may be required. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Do cavity fillings require anesthesia?

Hi there, Some people will choose local freezing for fillings while others don’t want it. It comes down to your threshold of pain and anxiety. If the cavity is within the enamel or superficial, there is no need for freezing, but if deeper in the dentin - inner Syed by nerves - you will feel something and freezing is a choice. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Can I have orthodontic advice for class 3 malocclusion?

Hi, Hope the move to LA went well!! Class III is a difficult task...the diagnosis is very important. As I am not an orthodontist, I can only give you my thoughts. Depending on the ceph analysis, we can determine what the growth pattern is for the child; if the child is a vertical growth pattern with an anterior open bite, it will be advisable to wait till after her growth spurt, as her continued growth will result in a failed orthodontic treatment, i.e., open bite reoccurs. Sometimes, regardless of interceptive attempts, jaw surgery may still be required. Another reason to possibly wait till after growth. Again, very difficult to assess without all the information. But do seek out a reputable orthodontist in your new neighborhood and ask all your questions. Hope this helped. READ MORE

  • Can oral surgeons perform implant surgery?

Hi, Oral surgeons can definitely perform implant surgery but don’t restore them, i.e., the crown part. Periodontist, like oral surgeons can place implants, but do not restore. General dentist, if properly trained, can place and restore. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • What is the difference between an oral surgeon and a dentist?

Hi, An oral surgeon specializes in surgery. He has gone through 4 extra years of training in surgery. They don’t do fillings, root canals, etc... A dentist can perform any procedure they are comfortable doing. If they feel that a certain case is more complicated or above their comfort level, you will be referred to a specialist. Obviously, some dentists are more comfortable performing some procedures over others. READ MORE

  • How young is 'too young' for braces?

HI there, and thanks for your question. The age to start braces actually depends on the condition being treated. For example, If there is a habit such as thumbsucking, orthodontic treatment will start sooner. The norm for braces is around 11-13 years old. Girls have a growth spurt at around 11, and boys 13. Your dentist will be able to guide you. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Can dentists treat sleep apnea?

Hi there, Do check with your dentist, as regulations may differ from region to region. Dentists can treat sleep apnea if the individual's case is mild to moderate. After a sleep study is completed, visit your dentist to allow him to evaluate your situation. Oral appliances and lasers (nightlase) are a couple of different modalities which can help. READ MORE

  • Does a teeth whitening have long-lasting effects?

Hi, Typically, teeth whitening lasts for approximately 6-8 months depending on habits. If your diet includes red wine and curries, for example, the effect will not last as long. In smokers, the effect will not last as long either. So, touch-ups are done 1-2 times a year. Hope this helps. READ MORE
