Get to know Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Kalyani Medicherla Kumar, who serves patients in Sparta, Tennessee. 

Dr. Kumar is a highly-regarded obstetrician-gynecologist whose area of expertise is laparoscopic surgery performed for a variety of obstetrical issues and gynecological disorders. At present, she is in practice with Saint Thomas Medical Partners – Gynecology in Sparta, Tennessee.

With more than three decades of experience in women’s healthcare, Dr. Kumar performs a full spectrum of procedures in office and hospital settings, including colposcopy, destruction/excision of lesion of cervix, endocervical curettage, endometrial ablation, excision/shaving, destruction of skin and subcutaneous tissue (including Mohs micrographic surgery), tissue transfer, gynecologic cancer screening, laparoscopic and open hysterectomy, hysteroscopy, laparotomy, open and laparoscopic myomectomy, and more. She also treats a wide range of conditions pertaining to her specialty, such as asymptomatic post-menopausal status, atrophic vaginitis, carcinoma in situ, cervical cancer, cervical polyps, cervicitis, ectopic pregnancy,  encounters for normal pregnancies, endometriosis, HPV, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, menstrual disorders, noninflammatory cervical disorders, osteoporosis, ovarian cysts, pap smear abnormalities, perimenopause, polycystic ovarian syndrome, symptomatic menopause, uterine fibroids, uterine prolapse, vaginal and pelvic prolapse, and vaginitis and/or vaginosis.

Back in 1974, Dr. Kumar earned her medical degree from the University of Health Sciences / Osmania Medical College in India. Upon relocating to the United States, she served both her internship and residency at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Following her education, the doctor became board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The ABOG is a non-profit organization that provides board certification for practicing obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States and Canada. 

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), she is a member of the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons and the Richmond Academy of Medicine.

Obstetrics and Gynecology is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynecology (covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts). An obstetrician-gynecologist, or OB-GYN, is a healthcare professional who specializes in female reproductive health. 

Licensed to practice medicine in Tennessee, Florida, and Virginia, Dr. Kumar attributes her success to being very passionate about patient care & obstetrics and gynecology, as well as being consistent with positive outcomes. She is a published author of three books and two book chapters. 

Outside of the office, she enjoys listening to music, singing, playing the veena, and spending time by the water.
