  • How long does it take to recover from oral surgery?

    Usually a couple of days. I tell patients, day 1 - you usually need some pain pills. Day 2 - you may need or you may not, and by day 3 - you should have no pain unless you 'mess' with the area of surgery. If you have pain that is becoming very intense on the 3rd day, you have a dry socket. You are in the high risk category for dry sockets (female, young, and lower molars are the most common), so follow your doctor's advice after the surgery. READ MORE

  • Will antibiotics help a dry socket?

    None. A dry socket is exposed bone. If you lose the blood clot that filled the socket after an extraction (spitting, suction, smoking can cause this), then you have exposed bone. It is very painful to have exposed bone. It is not an infection, however. It needs to be dressed with medication at the dental office. It will usually go away within 2 weeks, but most patients can't take 2 weeks of the pain. READ MORE

  • Can I get my fillings changed to white?

    Yes, we do it all the time. Silver fillings are very durable and cost effective, but not very aesthetic. Composite, or white, fillings are not as durable as silver and cost more. READ MORE

    No, extractions do. Dentures can rub sore spots in the bone and may need to be adjusted READ MORE

  • How do you stop enamel erosion?

    Avoid foods and drinks high in acid (lemons, sodas) and wear a night guard to prevent wearing of the enamel. Don't brush too hard. A sonic brush is helpful READ MORE

  • How can I make my teeth move faster with braces?

    You can't. It can actually damage your roots if you move them too fast. Let the dentist decide when you need to tighten the braces or change the invisalign. READ MORE

  • Does exposure to nuclear medicine affect your oral health?

    Interesting field and question and quite frankly, above my pay grade. But I know that one of the main concerns with nuclear medicine is radiation and therefore it should have no more or less risk than taking x-rays (radiographs). Radiation is cumulative over time within the human body so minimizing exposure to radiation is important. We always look at the risks vs benefits when using any radiation for diagnostic purposes. Nuclear medicine has risks and benefits, just like our bite wings. The main reason it is not used in dentistry is cost. READ MORE

  • How long does fissure sealant last?

    Depends on a lot of factors but in my practice in reality, I see them going a few years. I have had some last 15 but most are gone much sooner than that. READ MORE

  • How quickly does plaque grow?

    Plaque is bacteria. Bacteria grows depending on how much sugar you feed them and how well you clean out the colonies. Studies have shown that plaque is returning within hours after a professional cleaning. We clean more for the tartar than the plaque when we clean professionally. It returns usually in 3 to 6 months after a cleaning. READ MORE

  • Can a dental implant crown be replaced?

    Yes. As long as the implant itself is going okay, then you can remove the crown and make a new one. READ MORE

  • Waiting on root canal after deep filling?

    The nausea and fever are not related to the tooth. You definitely want to see your regular physician for that. The pain near your ear could be related to the tooth or could be clenching pain. Very common symptom for someone who is clenching too much especially at night. The cold test is fairly conclusive that the tooth needs a root canal. If you put cold on a tooth, it should hurt. If it doesn’t, something is wrong with the nerve. The infection might not be big enough for the dentist to see it yet but the cold test tells her what she needs to know. In summary, get the root canal, check for clenching, and go see your physician. READ MORE

  • Canker sore or wisdom teeth?

    Unfortunately there is no great treatment for canker sores (or apthous ulcers). You have to wait that one out. Usually 2 weeks. If it persists longer than that, see your dentist. READ MORE

  • Deep filling?

    The pain is either from the nerve dying due to the decay or trauma from removing the decay OR it’s a high bite. I’m sure the dentists checked and adjusted the bite at your follow up visit, but if not, ask him to. The main cause for pain after a new filling is placed is high bite. This tooth should not touch before any other in your mouth. If the bite is good, get the root canal. For your other questions: if it is infected, the pain will return usually 3 weeks after getting off the antibiotic. There is no difference. A root canal is when we remove the bad nerve. READ MORE

    Go back to the dentist. He can dress it and make it feel better. READ MORE

  • Why do I have lumps on my tongue?

    The bumps at the very back of the tongue are normal. They are called circumvallate papilla and are related to taste. They are in a V formation. Look them up and compare pictures to your tongue. If they look the same, you’re good but you should go to the dentist twice and year where you should be checked for cancer at each visit. READ MORE

  • How long should I be swollen after dental implant surgery?

    Usually very little swelling. Might be sore for up to a week but rarely see significant swelling. READ MORE
