  • What is the education and training required to become a psychiatrist?

That’s a good question. The first step is a Bachelors degree. I chose a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. This covers all of the prerequisites for medical school and is a great foundation for all of the advanced courses you will encounter in medical school. Four more years of medical school is required. It is at this point you will have to choose which field of medicine you wish to study. At this time, you will receive your M.D. degree. If at this time you haven’t decided which field best suits you, an internship might be in order. If psychiatry is your passion, then four more years are required for general psychiatry, more years are required if you wish to sub specialize. This could be child & adolescents, geriatrics, and many others. I hope this helps. In other words, 12 years beyond H.S. READ MORE

  • What can I do for my fears?

You have a cognitive problem that is best handled by none other than yourself. It is best handled by slowly training your negative thought processes to be rejected and replaced by the more positive thoughts with something like “I’ll be fine.” If, over time, this proves to be ineffective, place a rubber and on your wrist and when the unwanted thoughts enter your mind, give the band a good pop and say to yourself, “NO!!! I will not listen you." This may or may not be subtle, whatever works for you. Good luck for you in dealing with this old, nagging problem. READ MORE

  • Can bipolar disorder affect anyone at any age?

That is a good question. To generalize: The older a person is, the less likely he/she is to develop this disorder. The more prevalent this occurs in relatives, the greater the chances one would be afflicted by this. Reasons one might become ill later in life would be a side effect of certain medications such as steroids. Once this is treated, the chances of a reoccurrence would be rare. Another reason for late life occurrence is extreme and possibly unrelenting stress. This is not contagious, but usually medication induced or innate. READ MORE
