Dr. MacKenzie is a passionate veterinarian who served cats and dogs and their families for more than two decades at Southmount Animal Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She established the hospital in 1994 to provide a full spectrum of veterinary services to animal patients and their families in Hamilton and surrounding areas.
Now retired from practice, Dr. MacKenzie attributes her years of success in her field due to her passion for animals and animal care. A member of the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association and the Canadian Veterinary Organization, she strongly believes in preventative care in order to thoroughly maintain each animal patient’s well-being.
Being a farm girl from the Brant County area, she commenced her career in treating horses, cows, sheep, and goats, as well as dogs and cats. In 1986, she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Ontario Veterinary College of the University of Guelph. By 1988, she was specializing in pet medicine and building a thriving career in the veterinary medicine arena.
Veterinary medicine deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, disorder, and injury in animals. The scope of veterinary medicine is wide, covering all animal species, both domesticated and wild, with a wide range of conditions which can affect different species. A veterinarian is a medical professional who protects the health and well-being of both animals and people. They diagnose and control animal diseases, as well as treat sick and injured animals. They also advise owners on proper care of their pets and livestock.
On a more personal note, Dr. Mackenzie enjoys horseback riding. She and her husband live on a farm in Flamborough, Ontario, where they raise goats and egg-laying chickens. Their pets are Lizzy, Sammy, Matimeo, Pikatu, and Felicity.
