Get to know Endocrinologist Dr. Brian J. Fertig, who serves patients in Piscataway, New Jersey.
A skilled endocrinologist with more than three decades of clinical experience, Dr. Fertig is the Founder & President of the Diabetes & Osteoporosis Center in Piscataway, New Jersey.
Additionally, Dr. Fertig is an Associate Professor at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers University and is Chairman of the Department of Diabetes & Endocrinology at Hackensack Meridian Health at JFK University Medical Center.
Licensed to practice medicine in New Jersey, he is affiliated with several area hospitals, including Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) New Brunswick, RWJUH Rahway, RWJUH Somerset, and Hackensack Meridian Health at JFK University Medical Center.
Dr. Fertig graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and earned his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine. He then went on to complete his internship and residency at Seton Hall University’s Saint Elizabeth Hospital (now Trinitas Regional Medical Center), before serving as the fourth-year postgraduate administrative and teaching Chief Resident at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, an affiliate of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai – where Dr. Fertig also served as a Clinical Instructor. He served his fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Tulane University School of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
A Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE), Dr. Fertig is board-certified in endocrinology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Dr. Fertig has also been invited to speak at numerous international forums, including multiple Conferences in Torino Italy sponsored by the Academy of Sciences, addressing a mixed European audience of scientist and clinicians on various metabolism-related topics. This winter Dr. Fertig will also speak at the Neuroscience World Congress – jointly sponsored by Johns Hopkins University and St. Louis University – where he will discuss the endocrinology and metabolism of the stress response.
Among his accomplishments, Dr. Fertig has authored Metabolism and Medicine, a two volume book covering both basic and applied aspects of metabolism. Volume 1 explores areas of modern physics with major implications for biology and medicine, with Volume 2 focusing on the metabolic basis for the development of chronic diseases of aging through complex interactions of multiple parameters. Overall, the book can be viewed as a primer for a scientific foundation, which is aimed to guide students, physicians, and other healthcare professionals (applied scientists) as well as the larger family of basic interdisciplinary and computer scientists, and to serve as a resource for the pursuit of three basic drives: autonomy, mastery, and purpose.
Thus far, he has received more than 15 accolades from international giants in the field of metabolism, including:
Michael Houghton, PhD, 2020 Nobel Laureate & Physiology, Professor of Medicine, University of Alberta: “A comprehensive and original opus linking metabolism with disease and preventative directions for the future. A must-read for experts and students alike.”
Jeffrey I. Mechanick, MD, Professor of Medicine, past President of the American College of Endocrinology and the American College of Clinical Endocrinologists & Director of Metabolic Support within the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Disease at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: “Metabolism and Medicine by Dr. Brian Fertig is an unparalleled adventure, leaving the reader with just the right measure of resolve to learn even more. I strongly recommend Dr. Fertig’s opus for those still interrogating metabolism and medicine for satisfying answers.”
Bart Staels, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology (‘classe exceptionnelle’) at Institut Pasteur de Lille, France: “This transdisciplinary book beautifully tells the story of the dynamics of life in health and disease. In an unprecedented tour de force, Brian Fertig connects fundamental physicochemical mechanisms to the dynamics of metabolism. A mind-boggling book, for everyone to read!”
Stan Schwartz, MD, Emeritus Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and mentor for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship faculty members during Dr. Fertig’s fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania: “This is a masterpiece!!! A truly unique point of view that should make all physicians THINK more as they care for their patients. I know you’ve been working hard for a long time on this and want to let you know – YOU’VE SUCCEEDED!”
Seth Braunstein MD, PhD, Emeritus Associate Professor Medicine, Past Director Diabetes Program at the University of Pennsylvania (Perleman) School of Medicine and Dr. Fertig’s mentor during his Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism fellowship at Penn: “What a monumental work! It reads very well and is a wonderful history of the understanding and development of human metabolism and physiology in health and disease. How you put all this together astounds me, and I congratulate you. I would recommend the 2 volumes for any student of the history of science and especially to those interested in the field of metabolism and it’s development, as well as to people active in the field.”
In the December 2021 issue of the Herald HSOA Journal of Alternative, Complementary & Integrative Medicine, Dr Fertig along with Deepak Chopra and Jack Tuszynski, published his healthcare model, “The Physiological Fitness Landscape”. This dynamic and precision personalized scale of medicine has transformative potential for the future of medicine, and was introduced by Dr Fertig and Dr Tuszynski in Volume 1 of his book, Metabolism &Medicine, being released 1/26/2022. The model uses methods first developed in the physical sciences and adapts them to medicine and physiology. It is proposed as a powerful tool in the management of disease and in the maintenance of long health span.
Additionally, Dr. Fertig has co-authored several online article publications with Deepak Chopra, MD, and Jack A. Tuszynski, Ph.D., D.Sc., including “Is Metabolism The Key To Disease And Aging?”, “What If Aging Is a Mistake?”, “Why Isn’t Your Body Perfect?”, “The Remarkable Importance Of The Goldilocks Zone”, “An Improbable Mystery: Who’s Minding the Store?”, “What If Everything Is Alive?”, and “Order Out of Chaos, Why you Aren’t a Hurricane?”.
