It is important to know the cause of the cough. Sometimes this is asthma aggravated by a viral illness. If it is asthma, the asthma therapy may stop the cough. How effective are air purifiers to prevent allergies for kids?
A HEPA filter can be helpful for removing small particles, such as animal dander or mold spores. It must be purchased to cover the size of the room and must be running 24 hours per day with the door closed. Do allergies change?
Allergies can change over time. With lack of exposure, there is a decrease in allergic antibodies. Some changes occur with aging. How they change over time depends on the allergy. Some drug or insect sting allergies decrease over time with lack of exposure. READ MORE
Are antihistamines safe for consumption during pregnancy?
Different antihistamines have different safety ratings for pregnancy. Allegra is not to be used. Zyrtec and Claritin have been given a Category B for use in pregnancy. Zyrtec has been used safely. I am lactose intolerant, does it mean my child will also have this condition?
Lactose intolerance can be inherited. Speak to the pediatrician you are planning to use about your concerns, and let him see if there is a genetic test available for this. The gene involved is MCM6 on chromosome 2 (2q21). While testing may be available, it may be expensive. READ MORE
I found that I'm allergic to cats. Is it a lifelong allergy?
Cat allergy can be a lifetime problem. Testing will confirm the allergy. Cat allergy can be treated with medications before or after exposure. You should have them with you at all times. How harmful is poison oak when contacted?
Most people who are allergic to poison oak, ivy, or sumac can be quickly treated with topical steroid creams or oral steroids, if more severe. These are all plants which have a similar chemical on their surface. Not everyone is sensitive to these plants and some are never bothered. Fatalities would be extremely rare, unless untreated.
