Can milk cause loose stool in kids?
There are several reasons for having diarrhea, or other abdominal symptoms, such as abdominal pain, gas pain, even bloody stools or vomiting after the ingestion of milk. One of the most common ones is milk allergy, which can be an allergy to the cow's milk protein component in milk or lactose intolerance. Both can be tested, the first one by an allergist and the second one by a lactose intolerance breath test, performed by a pediatric gastroenterologist. Such children also usually have symptoms with the ingestion of other dairy products, such as yogurt, cheese, and butter. Taking the child off milk and milk products is usually effective after a specific diagnosis has been made. Soy milk is frequently a good substitute, though some children who are allergic to cow's milk are also allergic to soy milk. Almond milk and rice milk are well-tolerated. READ MORE
At what age can I introduce my child to coconut water?

What is the permanent treatment for head lice?
The primary option for treatment of head lice is topical Permethrin 1%: apply to the hair and scalp as directed, leave for 10 minutes before rinsing. Then, hand pick the nits or comb them out with a fine toothed comb while the hair is still wet. Repeat procedure in 10 days. All household members have to receive the same treatment. Another good choice are Pyrethrins. If these two don't work, it is necessary to switch to prescription lotions such as Ivermectin (Sklice) or Spinosad (Netroba). Meanwhile, all clothing, linen, towels, etc., that may have had contact with the hair should be washed with warm/hot water. READ MORE

My daughter is very fussy about her food. How do I ensure she gets proper nutrition?
Many children in this age group are picky and fussy eaters.The most important thing is to first establish that the growth curve has not declined, that the child has not lost any weight and that the child is active and energetic.It is frequently the energy level and activity that distracts them from sitting still and having a regular meal. Moreover, the child should have a CBC (complete blood count), to ascertain that there is no anemia, which can decrease the appetite on one hand and on the other, may be due to inadequate iron intake in the diet. Children frequently also get bored with the same diet over and over again, so it is important to be creative and presenting the child with new foods, while maintaining a balanced diet.One common observation is that going to a restaurant, will most likely motivate the child to eat more because of the variety of foods. I also usually advise parents, not to let the children play games on the ipad while eating, and not to play games in general, because it is distracting. Rather tell the child an interesting story during the meal. Most of all, discuss this concern with your pediatrician, who knows the child best and can give you more individualized advise. READ MORE
