Dr. Cervantes brings a wealth of formal medical training and depth of medical experience to UES. With dual citizenship in the United States and Mexico, he is fully bilingual in English and Spanish and has distinguished himself as a preeminent eye surgeon serving Chicago's diverse community. Dr. Cervantes attended medical school at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and received his ophthalmology and glaucoma subspecialty training at Asociación Para Evitar la Ceguera/Association to Prevent Blindness, the leading ophthalmological training program in Mexico City. He then entered Northwestern University's ophthalmology residency program where his medical, surgical and leadership skills led to his position as Chief Resident. Dr. Cervantes first gained personal experience with the challenges faced by disadvantaged communities while serving as the only doctor in San Martin Obispo, a rural area of 2,400 residents for whom he provided all basic medical care. He remains an active volunteer cataract surgeon in Mexico as well as in India. Dr. Cervantes holds a faculty position at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, where he is a popular teacher. He has presented clinical research work in glaucoma at the national meeting of the Association of Research and Vision in Ophthalmology. In his limited leisure time, you might find him cooking, riding his bicycle or walking his dog. He is also fluent in conversational French.
