  • My son had a heart transplant. What will recovery entail?

    The time from heart transplantation until doing normal activities varies and depends on how well your son was going into the transplant, his underlying disease (cardiomyopathy? Congenital heart disease?), and nutritional status. Best case scenarios can be being discharged 1 week after transplant, but, of course, can be much longer. In the best case, activities can restart within the month. Many transplant teams will have the child wear a mask for 6-12 months and going back to school is commonly over the same time span. He is likely to be able to do more activities than pre-transplant, but, again, this is dependent on several individualized factors. He will need to be compulsive taking his medications and following the plans outlined by his transplant team (clinic, cath with biopsies, blood draws, etc.). READ MORE

Get to know Pediatric Cardiologist Dr. Jeffrey A. Towbin, who serves the population of Memphis, Tennessee.

Dr. Towbin has been in practice for more than three decades and is currently serving patients within St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He is also affiliated with Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Towbin’s acclaimed career in medicine began in 1982, when he graduated with his Medical Degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Ohio. After a residency at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, he undertook his fellowship training at the Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.

Dr. Towbin is board certified in Pediatric Cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics, and has earned the coveted titles of Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and Fellow of the American Heart Association.
