Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Jaime David Martinez, who serves patients in Miami, Florida.

Treating patients ranging from children to adults, Dr. Martinez is a skilled ophthalmologist at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. His areas of expertise include dry eye disease, high risk corneal transplantation, corneal infectious diseases, ocular surface diseases, scleritis, keratoprosthesis, anterior segment reconstruction, secondary intraocular lenses, corneal collagen crosslinking for keratoconus, and corneal ectasia. 

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, of the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, is a center for ophthalmic care, research, and education. Faculty and staff treat patients from around the world in facilities in Miami-Dade County, Broward County, Palm Beach County, and Collier County.

Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Martinez serves as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.

A 2013 graduate of Autonomous University of Guadalajara, he performed his residency in ophthalmology at Asociacion para Evitar la Ceguera / UNAM in 2017. He followed this up with a research program in ophthalmology and a fellowship in ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 2018 and 2020, respectively. 

His research interests include dry eye diseases, ocular microbiology, high risk corneal transplantation, ocular chemical and thermal burns, and cicatricial conjunctivitis.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
