    No, in and of itself(the anesthetic) the gaseous entity can not, to my knowledge (I've been an anesthesiologist for 35 years) harm lung tissue. READ MORE

    Local anesthetic, in and of self as an entity, probably not. The placement of it (with a needle) possibly. The question specifically asked about 'nerve' damage, so no, but the local anesthetic itself, possibly--injected into a blood (heart issues) vessel, too much local anesthetic--problems, allergic reaction to the particular compound--problems. Each with those things being said, anesthesia-- from a purely statistical perspective, is a much safer experience than turning the keys in the ignition of your car and driving. READ MORE

    Nerve blocks most certainly can be used for hand surgery. Talk to your surgeon and your anesthesiologist and do it!! The procedure will probably have some component of sedation, as well as the block to help you hold still. It's most often easier to work on a stationery 'target'/surgical field. Where in the liver will the be from? Superficially? Close to the portal triad (deep)? Left side, right side, back? How skilled is the person taking the Biopsy? Ask.     Usually. A general anesthetic for an appendectomy will provide excellent anesthesia for any and all possible unexpected presentations of any individual appendix: adhesions, rupture, retroflexion of the appendix, laparoscopic procedure, etc. For an (?) elective appendectomy, perhaps a spinal anesthetic could be used in a hydrated, "normal" body habitus, not having eaten patient. Every case has its own nuances, and going into any anesthetic situation expecting anything and/or everything is a prudent mindset to have. If you have the equipment and OR staff experienced with total IV anesthesia (a helpful and available pharmaceutical staff), that could be an option. READ MORE

  • Does spinal anesthesia cause back pain?

    No. A spinal anesthetic does not cause back pain in and of itself. I, personally, have had 2 spinal anesthetics for each of my total knee operations.  READ MORE

  • How long will my back hurt after a spinal block?

    Why are you having a spinal anesthetic? Does your back already hurt and a 'spinal' injection is part of the treatment? If you are having a spinal as the primary anesthetic for a procedure (knee, foot, groin hernia, C-section, etc), your back shouldn't hurt at all. The skin where the spinal is/was administered will be similar to after a 'blood draw', a little local reaction to the skin being punctured. Depending on your age, hydration status,etc., a spinal has some other potential effects, but back pain, in and of itself is not one of them. I personally have had a spinal anesthetic for knee surgery. Back pain, if experienced, is not due to the spinal anesthetic. READ MORE

    Some with scoliosis can get an epidural provided they haven't had surgery and their 'back'/vertebra aren't fused together. Fused vertebrae eliminate the epidural space (nearly always). No epidural space, no epidural block. Sometimes intrathecal injections are still possible.  READ MORE
