Get to know Oncologist Dr. Johann Brandes, who serves the population of Tennessee. Dr. Brandes is tri-certified and fellowship trained oncologist. He holds certification in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Since its founding in 1936 to answer a public call to establish more uniform standards for physicians, Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has stood for the highest standard in internal medicine and its 20 subspecialties. Certification has meant that internists have demonstrated – to their peers and to the public – that they have the clinical judgment, skills and attitudes essential for the delivery of excellent patient care. Dr. Brandes currently practices as an Oncologist with Tennessee Oncology, and is affiliated with St Thomas Hospital in Rutherford, Tennessee, where he holds an expertise in Thorasic Oncology. Tennessee Oncology, one of the nation’s largest, community-based cancer care specialists, is home to one of the leading clinical trial networks in the country. Dr. Brandes graduated with his Medical Degree from the University of Munich in Germany in 1998, giving him over two decades of experience in his field. After obtaining his Medical Degree he completed his residency with the Humboldt University Berlin in Germany. He then relocated to the United States and completed his internal medicine residency with the John Hopkins Hospital. Wanting to further his training he then completed his Medical Oncology and Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship with the John Hopkins Hospital. To stay up to date in his field he remains a professional member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American College of Chest Physicians and has been inducted as a Fellow of the American College of St Thomas. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of cancer. The specialist who practices oncology is known as an oncologist. If an oncologist has special training in performing surgery on cancerous tumors, he or she is called a surgical oncologist. Dr. Brandes attributes his professional success to his hard work and diligence.
