About

Dr. Austin Harris is a board-certified cardiothoracic anesthesiologist with a background in psychologic theory. He completed his Anesthesiology residency at the University of California Irvine (UCI), and his Cardio-Thoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship at Keck Hospital of USC. After years of providing anesthesiology expertise for open heart surgery, heart and lung transplants, and major trauma surgeries, Dr. Harris was finding that ketamine, an anesthetic medication, could have profoundly positive outcomes, when utilized with specific patients.

This sparked his in-depth research of ketamine’s previously obscure properties, and its remarkable potential in treating patients suffering from mental health, chronic pain, and substance abuse struggles. Dr. Harris focused first on surgical patients presenting with unique mood, pain, and opioid dependency.

Then, after perfecting these techniques at medical offices across southern California, Dr. Harris formed NeuroRelief™ Ketamine & Infusion Therapy (Sherman Oaks, CA) to bring these successful results to the entire patient population. He expanded the use of ketamine infusion therapy to become a tool that empowers a broader and integrative treatment process.  This resulted in his creation of world-renowned programs combining the highest quality ketamine infusion therapy with a unique Mindfulness Meditation training and structured program, mindful cognitive behavior exercises, Certified Integration and Recovery Coaching, and real-time access to himself as a guide an support system throughout this transformational process.  These much-needed programs are now benefiting thousands of clients across the world.

  • What is procedural anesthesia?

Procedural Anesthesia is another term for “Monitored Anesthesia Care”, or a means of intravenous Anesthesia that does not require an invasive airway device. In other words, the patient is breathing without assistance and is given a titrated anesthetic strategy that is just sufficient enough to accomplish the task at hand; be it a radiologic scan for an anxious patient, or sedation combined with local anesthetic from the surgeon for minor procedures. • Do kids need anesthesia before being taken for a CT scan?

First of all I am sorry your young son is having pulmonary issues. For this reason I am sure they will be as conservative as possible with sedation as they would not want to further any issues he may have with his breathing and oxygenation. If he is extremely agitated such that the scan is unobtainable, you may be asked for permission to give one of several strategies of sedation, very briefly. An anesthesiologist would then be involved for sure and again would only provide the minimum degree of sedation to ensure both yours son’s safety, as well as efficacy of the CT. READ MORE

  • Can anaesthesia lead to neurological issues?

It is always a scary prospect when family members undigo surgical procedures, and it is very understandable to be sensitive to any changes in their baseline status after emergence from Anesthesia. Obviously it is our goal to avoid any preventable decreases in a patient’s functional of cognitive capacity. To answer your question directly, minor tremors or periods of delirium are not altogether uncommon and can be due to unavoidable decreases in a patients inhibitory neuro-transmitter function after General Anesthesia. In addition, there are many unpredictable effects of various commonly delivered peri-operative medications on a particular individuals system. If pre-existing cognitive deficits are present and identified, certain medications and types of inhaled anesthetics can be substituted. However, even with all means of due diligence, there is no perfectly predictive means to determine how each patient will react to a particular anesthetic regimen. This is why recognition of pre-existing deficits, choice of technique and close follow up postoperatively from the entire care team are all important. My best wishes on his recovery. READ MORE
