  • Other than a UTI what can be other causes of burning sensation while urinating?

A number of conditions can cause burning with urination. Infectious causes can also include yeast. Up to 40% of modern-day bacteria can go undetected with standard culture media. Because of this, we tend to use DNA sequencing in our office to test urine in patients such as your wife. Results come back faster than routine cultures, are much more sensitive, and include yeast variants. Other factors include bladder stones, scar tissue in the urethra, urethral diverticulum, or even polyps, which can be cancerous. Chronic conditions such as Interstitial Cystitis often cause dysuria or burning with urination without any infection. Gynecologic issues such as post menopausal vaginal atrophy (or withering of the female genitals) can lead to discomfort in the urethral region. In rare cases, herpes zoster or “shingles” can cause burning type sensation. Often, those patients say their urine is “boiling.” I hope this helps. Your wife may be best served seeing a local urologist to discuss her symptoms and do more testing. READ MORE
