  • I have a tiny puncture in my foot?

The blister is small and does not look infected. It’s ok to apply triple antibiotic ointment and a bandaid until it resolves. You may need to look for a different type of shoe to prevent blistering by decreasing friction. READ MORE

  • Is a walking boot better than a cast?

A walking boot will immobilize the foot and ankle to allow healing of the fracture. A cast will immobilize the foot and ankle as well, but the cast cannot be removed. People tend to heal faster in a cast with crutches versus a boot. This is due to compliance. People tend to remove the boot and end up putting more pressure on the fractured bone, slowing the healing process, even when using crutches. A cast is better. READ MORE

  • Does a podiatrist take care of foot deformities?

Yes, podiatrists treat foot deformities. Podiatrists treat ailments of the foot and ankle. READ MORE

  • Will I need time off work after toenail removal?

Most people can continue their regular activities following toenail removal with some additional soreness. If you sit for most of the work day you should have no problem returning to work after the procedure. If you have an active position and stand for long hours I would suggest taking a day or two off work post procedure. READ MORE

  • What is the fastest way to recover from bunion surgery?

Follow all instructions given by the surgeon. Limit partial weightbearing, only move when necessary and elevate the foot to decrease swelling. READ MORE

  • Should I see a podiatrist or chiropractor?

Definitely see a podiatrist. Podiatrists specialize in disorders of the foot and ankle. Problems can be treated conservatively or surgically. Chiropractors can treat problems with balance and problems stemming from the back which can contribute to foot pain. However, podiatrists are a better choice to evaluate and treat all foot and ankle problems. READ MORE

  • What medication can I take for ankle pain?

As long as you aren’t on blood thinners or have stomach problems you can take Ibuprofen or Aleve. If you have any of the above issues you can take Tylenol. READ MORE

  • Should I go to the doctor for a dislocated ankle?

Yes, the ankle may need to be reset. A doctor needs to rule out broken bones, and evaluate the extremity to make sure the ligaments that attach the bones are intact as well. READ MORE

  • Do you need to bring your child to the doctor if they fell off their bike?

Yes, if the pain is continuous with little relief and difficulty performing normal activities. The child needs a medical evaluation with possible x-rays. READ MORE

  • Does a torn ligament in the ankle require surgery?

It depends if it is a complete tear or partial tear. I partial tear can heal with immobilization, but will leave scar tissue. Sometimes surgical repair of a partial tear can increase ankle stability ( it depends on the severity and the doctor). A complete tear requires surgery, this prevents an unstable ankle when walking. READ MORE

  • Can a podiatrist perform surgery?

Yes, podiatrists are trained in surgery and many are on staff at local hospitals. You have to get evaluated first to determine whether you are a surgical candidate. READ MORE

  • How long does it take for a broken foot to heal?

It takes 6-8 weeks for bone to heal as long as you are compliant with staying off of your foot to allow healing. READ MORE

  • My right foot has been hurting, what could it be?

Yes, you should see a doctor for a complete evaluation. It’s most likely coming from inflammation in the soft tissue on the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia. However, there are other issues that could be taking place. If you can, take an anti inflammatory medication like Motrin or Aleve, ice the foot, and follow-up with a podiatrist for a work-up and x-rays. READ MORE

  • What can I do for dry and cracked feet?

Feet are dry due to lack of moisture. Some people have naturally dry skin. The skin can callus (get hard, thick, and dry) and with additional pressure from standing/walking cause cracks. You need to moisturize at least twice a day. Vaseline works great on the bottoms of the feet. You can even apply Vaseline to the bottoms of the feet at and apply socks overnight. Do not place Vaseline on the tops of the feet because the skin is different and your pores can clog. Soaking the feet in warm water and using a pumice stone on hard areas of skin can be beneficial prior to moisturizing. READ MORE

  • Is there a cure for toenail fungus?

There are treatments for fungal nails; over the counter and prescription. However, there is no 100% cure for fungal nails. The oral medication (Lamisil) has the highest cure rate of 70%. Response to medication also depends on the progression of the fungal infection. Generally, people who have early changes in the nail tend to respond better to treatment. I would suggest going to your local Podiatrist for an evaluation. They can take nail cultures as well to confirm the diagnosis of fungus. Sometimes the nail changes are due to trauma and that can mimic a fungal infection. READ MORE

  • Do bunion correctors work?

If the bunion is painful you should tell her to see a specialist. Many people live with bunions with little to no discomfort and do not need to see a doctor. OTC bunion pads, shields, or splints can benefit a person by padding the bone on the side of the foot. Also they can relieve pressure from the great toe pressing on the 2nd toe. Once the padding/splint is removed the bunion will stay the same. The only way to structurally correct the bunion is surgery with shoe modifications such as orthotics (insoles) to prevent recurrence. READ MORE

  • Is Vick's really a treatment for athlete's foot?

Vick’s vapor rub does not treat athletes foot. For many years people have applied it to fungal toenails. I believe the menthol component thins out the nail, nail begins to peel in layers providing a better appearance. Athletes foot is a result of fungus in the skin so in order to get rid of it, you’ll need an anti fungal cream that is fungicidal (kills fungus) which can be bought or prescribed. READ MORE

  • What can I do to prevent bunions?

To prevent bunion reoccurrence you have to balance your walking with supportive shoes and orthotics. A huge reason you developed a bunion is from inheritance from a family member, but they enlarge due to poor fitting shoes and your gait (walking) pattern. Orthotics hold your feet in a neutral position to decrease the chance of a returning bunion. READ MORE

  • Should I see a podiatrist for my feet If I have diabetes?

Yes, as a diabetic there are many complications that can occur in regards to your feet. You could be suffering from nerve degeneration called neuropathy. This can cause severe pain in some people or it be other issues that need evaluation. You should go see your local Podiatrist as soon as you are able. We manage diabetic foot problems and can also refer you to another specialty if deemed appropriate. Also, if there were no foot problems you should have an annual foot evaluation by a podiatrist as a diabetic. READ MORE

  • I think I have an ingrown toenail. What does this usually look like?

Ingrown toenails don’t necessarily have a “look.” If the toe is painful surrounding the border of the nail, especially if you press it, it is an ingrown nail. In the early stages the skin surrounding the nail looks normal. The longer the nail remains in the skin you can begin to see redness, warmth, swelling, and even pus formation. The sooner the ingrown nail is taken out you can avoid antibiotic use for an infection that can form. Don’t try to perform the ingrown removal yourself. This can make the situation worse. Go to a local Podiatrist. READ MORE
