Do root canals happen more often as you age?
It is more likely that as you age there is more of a chance that you may have a root canal. As the teeth age they endure more and more use and abuse. The more decay, trauma, fillings, crowns(caps), etc., the greater the chance of nerve involvement, infection, and nerve death. But do not be concerned that because your mother or other relative has endured Root canal Therapy that you are destined for the same fate. READ MORE
Adult tooth is loose. What should I do?
I apologize for such a late response. I hope that you have been able to get some dental advice for this problem. I would like to say first that you should seek dental help as it may be the only way to prevent the tooth from being lost. It is generally believed that the sooner you seek treatment after such a traumatic injury the better the chance is to save the tooth. Without a clinical examination and xray of the area it is difficult if not impossible to give you advice. the tooth may have been partially if not completely avulsed due to displacement from it's socket or even the root may be fractured causing the looseness. Depending on what has happened it may be just a waiting game to see how the tooth responds in time, or on the other hand the tooth amy need to be removed and replaced. Please make an appointment , if you have not already, with a licensed dentist as soon as you are able. READ MORE
Skin is shedding on the inside of my mouth (my cheeks). Is this normal?
Your "skin", or oral mucosa is in a constant state of being sloughed and replaced. It may be more noticeable if you have eaten something that you may have a contact allergy to, it may be that way from a burn from hot food, or perhaps if you tend to sleep with your mouth open. Dry oral tissues tend to be more noticeably shedding. Best to perhaps try to really brush your teeth, gums, and tongue before and after you go to bed to minimize that feeling. If need be you can try to change tooth pastes. If that fails then it would probably be beneficial to seek medical attention. READ MORE
Wisdom teeth removal
There are several factors that the dentist must take into consideration in determining whether to remove the wisdom tooth or to refer it to an oral surgeon. First and foremost is the determination that the tooth indeed needs to be removed and for what reason. Not all wisdom teeth require extraction, though a very high percentage do. In making this diagnosis it is important to determine presence of infection, likeliness of complications, medications taken by the patient, medical history of the patient, ability of the dentist as well as training of the dentist. I think that there are many other less obvious factors to take into consideration, but perhaps the most important thing is try to insure that patient has as atraumatic of an experience as possible. "Because I can", is not a good reason to remove a tooth if it is not in the best interest of the patient. If your general dentist knows and feels that he is well qualified, and you trust that he is, then by all means the two of you should discuss whom you wish to extract the tooth. It should never be a matter of ego. If having an oral surgeon remove your tooth would make you feel better then always do what you feel is in your best interest. As a general dentist, I want my patients to be stress free and confident in their decision making. READ MORE
