Will my teeth hurt after veneers?
It depends, they should not as long as they are healthy and not already sensitive because the preps should generally be relatively minimally invasive, however if the teeth are already sensitive or decayed some sensitivity or discomfort could be expected, typically short lived, so a conversation should be had with the dentist performing the veneer therapy to inform you of the condition of the teeth and what sensitivity to expect, the dentist treating you will know you best so he or she can best answer the question based on each individual's circumstances. Do gum abscesses go away on their own?
Not usually, typically an acute gum abscess is manifested due to some foreign object that has gotten trapped under the gum line such as a popcorn hull or the like or possibly due to chronic debris such as plaque or calculus that is trapped again under the gum line both of which result in inflammation and eventually infection as the body's way of dealing with the foreign object. If not removed the foreign object will eventually cause gum abscess and eventual bone loss until removed either by the patient with regular oral hygiene or if needed by the dental professional using dental instruments such as scalers and or sonic devices which in some cases may require anesthesia. In some cases a gum abscess can result from a tooth nerve infection that can also infect the surrounding gum too, in that case root canal treatment will be required to resolve the infection. A dentist should evaluate the problem to determine if it is a gum origin problem or a tooth nerve origin problem so that the correct treatment can be initiated to resolve the infection. READ MORE
How do you know if your tooth root is exposed?
Well there are alot of signs such as the texture of the surface, the contour of the surface but in in very simplistic terms most times the root surface is a little darker than or even slightly yellow compared to the enamel of the tooth, so when you see a change in color close to the gumline a lot of times that can be an indication that root is exposed. Also, sometimes exposed roots can be sensitive at the gumline when the root is exposed where the enamel part of the tooth is generally not sensitive, this is due to the fact that the root was originally insulated with gum before but when it is exposed the insulation, the gum, that used to be there is no longer there. Hope that helps, Dr. K READ MORE
