Lung health question?
I am sorry you are not feeling well, but this is potentially serious. Please get to an Emergency Room at your nearest Hospital. This could be congestive heart failure, and that would require medications to assist your heart, and stabilize your condition. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
Can hand nerve damage from a stroke be repaired?
I am sorry your friend has had a stroke causing some problems with his or her hand. There is no way to "repair" nerves damaged by strokes, but with time, some patients do recover some or most of the function in an area damaged by the stroke. PT is very helpful, and your friend needs to do whatever is needed to prevent additional strokes, which might be medications. READ MORE
What condition do I have?
This is very serious, and there are a number of bad things that could explain these symptoms. Please get to an Emergency Room ASAP, for tests to figure out the cause, and to get treatment to feel better quickly. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
Blood mixed in stools?
Please see a Gastroenterologist ASAP. What you are describing is not likely from internal hemorrhoids. You need to have some tests done to check for serious conditions, including cancer, but more likely Ulcerated Colitis, or Proctitis. Please call today to be seen ASAP. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
Could I have contracted the HIV virus from this patient?
I am sorry you have had this exposure. It is possible, but not likely, unless the exposure was to a large amount of blood in a patient with a lot of circulating virus. That said, please arrange for an evaluation by employee health , ASAP. I presume the initial contact was documented, but if not please also report that now. I hope you have negative testing, but if not, treatment now is standard. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
Can hospice care be done at home?
Hi, the quick answer is yes, but your friend needs to evaluated by the usual medical person who treats him or her, and then an eval will be done by a home health care agency, and if appropriate, the service will be ordered. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
Can I drink water before a PSA blood test?
Thanks for the question. Yes, please do drink water before the test, and frankly it is a good idea to drink water before ALL lab tests, fasting or not. It makes it easier to get the specimen, and does not affect any results. READ MORE
How long after kidney stone surgery can I drink alcohol?
I am sorry you have kidney stones. You did not give enough information for me to answer. What surgery are you having? There are a number of different procedures which you might need to have , and how long afterward you could drink alcohol depends on the procedure. Please ask your surgeon this question. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
Should I go to the ER?
I am sorry you are feeling bad and are unable to keep food down. Yes, please go to the ED, you may be dehydrated also, and possibly may have some blood abnormalities which need to be corrected with IV fluids. READ MORE
Can I drink coffee with heart arrhythmia?
Hi, It depends. If you have intermittent rapid heartbeats, which are not atrial Fibrillation, or some other worrisome rapid arrhythmia, a small amount of coffee is probably OK, but by a small amount I am talking about 6 ounces or less, one time a day. If you notice that the rapid heartbeats or irregular beats are worse after coffee then stop drinking it, please. But please talk to your regular medical team, or if you have a cardiologist, please address this with him or her. READ MORE
Do I have abdominal aortic aneurysm?
Hi, I am sorry you are suffering. Please have your regular medical person check this for you. It is unlikely due to your age, but there are conditions which can cause vascular problems in younger people. If needed, a simple abdominal ultrasound can identify any vascular problems in your abdomen. Hope you get help soon. Cynthia Point READ MORE
What antibiotics are most effective for a kidney infection?
I am sorry you have this infection. The best antibiotic is determined by the bacteria which your urine culture grows. Please contact the clinic or doctor that diagnosed your infection for that information. If a culture has not been done, you need to do that, as you might not have an infection, and any symptoms might be caused by something else, and you need to investigate more. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
Kidney issue?
I am not sure why you are concerned about the CT Scan, but it is the best next step. Thankfully you do not have bladder cancer as your bladder test was negative, but the scan is mandatory to evaluate for kidney lesions which might bleed, which include kidney cancer, non cancerous cysts, or other lesions. Kidney cancer is potentially life threatening, so if you have it, finding it and having surgery might save your life. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
Neck lump question?
I am sorry you are dealing with this problem. I don’t think the Emergency Room visit would help you. I would call your regular practitioner and see if an expedited ENT visit could be arranged, or if another ENT might be available for you. If you have a Dermatologist, please have a full skin survey, including your scalp, with your Mom’s history. Have a dental visit to check your mouth carefully also. If all is well with these exams, then have your doctor recommend a General Surgeon so you can have an excisional biopsy. If you have a cat, you should be checked for Cat Scratch fever, which may not present with any fevers, and can present with lumps. I hope you can get this evaluated quickly. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
Kidney function?
It is good you are monitoring your blood tests. This does represent a bit of a drop, but several non-worrisome things could explain these numbers. If you had exercised vigorously before the recent test, that can increase the creatinine, and if you were a bit dehydrated, that can decrease the GFR. It is very important to drink fluid before any kidney testing, even if you are "fasting". The best choice is water. Your cholesterol medicine should not affect either of these numbers, and your BP is good, so they are not the answer to your question. Your A1C is great, so diabetes is not in the mix either. If you are really worried, you could contact your doctor and do another test of the kidney function now. But these numbers are still OK. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
I'm frequently urinating?
Hi, There is some missing information which would to answer your question. How much fluid do you drink, more fluid, more urine? What color is your urine? Clear, yellow, in between? Do you wake up st night to urinate, once or more often? Is someone in your family or circle of friends diabetic? How do you have access to testing material? A family history of diabetes can increase your risk. Perhaps a visit to a family doctor or internist would be a good idea. A test can be ordered to look at your average blood sugar over a month or so, and can add more information. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
Asthma treatment?
Hi, Montelucast can help you feel better, and could reduce some of your symptoms, if your asthma is allergic. However, it will not “cure” your asthma. If you have allergic asthma, it may be possible to have allergy testing, and allergy shots tailored to your allergens, or possibly sublingual drops instead of shots, which might cure you. Please consult with your pulmonary specialist or allergist. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
Syringe needle broke in arm?
This could be a problem. Please go to your nearest Emergency Room. ASAP. It could migrate if it is in a vein, or could be a Indus for a bad infection if it is in your skin, or the tissue under the skin. Even if it is in the skin, it could still migrate into a vein and go to your heart. Please go now. Cynthia Point, MD READ MORE
Should I visit an urgent care for low hemoglobin?
It depends on how low, and how quickly it dropped. Bleeding is a common cause and can be internal, so not visible. Some people always have lowish hemoglobin, from a different form of hemoglobin that a person can be born with. How did you find out about it being low? Was a test done by your doctor's office? If yes, the next step would be to go back to that doctor for some direction about how to proceed. READ MORE
Is varicose vein treatment with ablation permanent?
The veins that are ablated are permanently fixed, but the other veins that may not be showing now may slowly dilate and become visible. The underlying anatomical problem that leads to the veins swelling is not fixed systemically. READ MORE
