  • Can oil pulling prevent tooth infections?

I know that Coconut Oil has anti fungal and anti bacterial properties, Oregano Oil has antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, but there have been no clinical studies that I know of that verify that they could prevent tooth infections. The issue is two-fold not only does the bacteria need to be controlled but also the teeth need extra minerals to repair them. Research has shown that tooth decay can be reversed sometimes if it is in the initial stages and has not penetrated the outer enamel layer fully. Once it gets into the next layer there is nothing I have seen or found that can prevent further spread of the disease process than actually doing a filling. READ MORE

  • How do you get rid of cavities naturally?

You can only get rid of cavities naturally if you catch them early on. The size of the cavity would need to be evaluated to determine if it is confined to the enamel (where it can be reversed) or if it has spread into the deeper tissues of the tooth structure in which case it will only grow larger the longer you wait to have it treated and more of your natural tooth structure will have to be removed similar to the growth of cancer tumors the more time it has to grow. • Why does my breath smell even after brushing my teeth and using mouthwash?

Use a tongue scraper, water pik, sonicare toothbrush, Peridex mouth rinse (Prescription daily for 2 weeks only), have a deep cleaning at your Dental office or a periodontist. Be tested for H. Pylori. Drink plenty of water throughout the day so you are not dehydrated. READ MORE

  • Why does my 5 year old daughter keep getting cavities?

Any sugary or acidic substance can cause cavities. If she drinks/eats juice, milk, soda pop, ice cream or any other food or liquid other than water (pH 7 or greater) she needs to rinse with non acidic water afterwards to prevent the liquids/foods from resting on her teeth. Also, if she is sick a lot or has any form of GERD she may have stomach acids playing a part in this. Cavities form at 5.5 pH or lower so if there is anything that can contribute to creating an acidic environment in her mouth it needs to be evaluated and eliminated. She can drink and eat whatever you deem good for her but she needs to brush her teeth, floss her teeth and as she gets older it would not be a bad idea to use a tongue scrapper to eliminate the bacteria that hide in the tongue. She may also have some of the more aggressive forms of bacteria in her mouth and she may need a prescription like Peridex mouth rinse. She may be too young for it. You should ask your Dentist about it. Might not be a bad idea to observe her sleeping and see if she breaths through her mouth. Drying out the mouth can make any residual food/liquid debris broken down by bacteria to sugar, than to acid, and because it is a dry environment with little to no saliva it is more concentrated and more damage occurs. Most cavities form at night so it would be wise to evaluate her diet, teeth cleaning and sleep patterns after her last meal of the day up to the time she sleeps at night and to observe as stated above whether she breaths through her mouth at night. • What are inflamed taste buds?

Almost everything that is not a concern in the mouth will resolve in two weeks. If it doesn't, I would get a second opinion. You can have inflamed taste buds due to irritation of some sort, whether it is spicy food or other irritants. Medications can also cause side effects, and vitamin inefficiencies can cause problems with the taste buds as well. There are numerous different types of taste buds that cover the surface of your tongue. READ MORE

  • How can I prevent cavities in my child?

Fluoride Varnish with calcium and phosphate minerals applied at a Dental Office every 6 months can help to strengthen his teeth and make them more resistant to cavities. Also a small prescription of fluoride daily can also help him. Cavities form by bacteria breaking down food particles to acid. The acid leaches minerals out of the teeth making them softer and prone to bacteria infiltration and cavities. Minerals begin to leach out of teeth when the pH in the mouth drops to 5.5. Fluoride makes it have to drop to 4.5 which is around a 10 times more acid to cause the same effect. Cleaning his teeth with a Water Pik on low and a Sonicare toothbrush on low will also help. • Can teeth grinding cause headaches?

Yes, your headaches may be connected to your teeth grinding. The jaw is a complicated two joint system with muscles and teeth that interact with each other. As a result if something is off balanced in your bite such as a filling, crown, or tooth in the wrong position or not perfectly balanced it will cause your body to feel the need to clench or grind. The body is trying to wear down or push the tooth into a different position. It is a very destructive process and can cause headaches through either excessive nerve feedback, muscle spasms, tooth pain, percussion waves traveling through the optic nerve and many other factors. You should have your bite checked by a professional well trained in TMJ and occlusion. He can make adjustments that may alleviate some if not all of your headaches. Also a night guard that is flat planned with a tripod of balanced occlusion (Left, Right, and Front) can also help protect your teeth and jaw at night while you are sleeping. This is a custom guard made by your dentist and a dental lab. The best ones have a soft inside and a hard outer shell. READ MORE

  • Can tooth grinding be a serious issue for kids?

Yes it can be a serious problem for children. I have seen some children that have ground off half of the length of their teeth and are on the verge of exposing the nerves of their teeth. Your daughter may have some imbalances in her bite. She may need a custom night guard to wear at night that has balanced flat planned occlusion to protect her teeth. A dentist can have a lab create one with a soft inside and a hard outer shell. Another option is to have her bite evaluated and to have an occlusal adjustment made to correctly balance her teeth which could be causing her jaw to feel the need to clench and grind due to muscles spasms created from lack of balanced support on the left and right sides of the jaw. Another possibility is that if you only see wear on the front teeth she may not be getting enough oxygen at night and could have sleep apnea and be in need of a sleep appliance or C-pap machine. If that is the case you should have a sleep doctor run some tests on her. READ MORE

  • How long do veneers last?

Veneers are a great option. They allow you to change anything about the shape, position and color of teeth to enhance your smile and if you would like give your teeth a bleached appearance without having to bleach them again. They can last a lifetime if done with a high quality lab and if the teeth are prepped correctly by the dentist. Also the cement used can make a difference in how long they last. It is possible for some of the veneers to not cement correctly or to have issues from time to time so you should plan on an occasional one that needs to be re-cemented. Our practice warranties all our work so that patients don't have to worry about additional costs should something like that happen. You should find a practice that will warranty their work for you as well. READ MORE

  • Why does a cracked tooth have to be pulled?

It depends on how it is cracked. If it cracks off to the side it can be saved. If it cracks down the middle of the tooth or root unfortunately even Root Canal Therapy cannot save it because bacteria will continue to have access to the inside of the root and be out of the reach of your bodies ability to prevent infections. READ MORE

  • What does it mean when my gums are sore?

It could be changes in your hormones, or possibly lack of certain vitamins. It could be due to bacteria or fungal infections. If you have cavities that are getting worse your immune system can mount a defense that damages the supporting gums and bone around or between the teeth. The gums may need to be cleaned more thoroughly with flossing followed by using the Water Pik. READ MORE

  • When is a root canal recommended?

Root Canal Therapy for a tooth may be recommended if it becomes infected due to trauma from accidentally getting hit too hard, having a large cavity that introduces bacteria into the inside nerve and blood vessel chambers of the tooth. When a tooth has dead necrotic tissue inside it can fester and create an abcess that can cause swelling and pain. Most teeth that need Root Canal Therapy hurt worse at night when you are trying to sleep, and may even wake you up. They throb, are a 10 out of 10 pain and it is usually very obvious that you need a Root Canal. Other problems may mimic the need for a Root Canal such as an imbalanced bite. Teeth nerves respond to trauma of any kind so if a tooth is chronically getting hit too hard it will become more and more sensitive to the point that it may feel like it needs a Root canal. A simple adjustment can remedy this fairly quickly. READ MORE

  • Is higher or lower pressure better with water flossers?

Starting around 4 and moving up to 6-8 is a good setting. If it is not painful to move to 9-10 it is more powerful and can dislodge more debris and irrigate deeper around the gum pockets. This wouldn't normally cause damage to the gums. Gums that are healthy will not bleed and should not hurt when using the waterpik. It is important to floss before the waterpik to help mechanically loosen some of the debris and have a more effective result. and the pockets will also become more shallow as they become healthier as a result of remaining clean and free from debris and bacteria. • What could be the reason behind the burning sensation in my gums?

It could either be a side effect of a medication you are taking, vitamin deficiency, fungal/bacterial infection or other pathology. You also may have calculus (plaque plus minerals) around your gums that is harboring bacteria and may need a cleaning to remove the deposits and prevent gum and bone disease. You should see a dentist to have them evaluate what may be happening. READ MORE

  • My daughter has a cut inside of her mouth from falling. How can I rule out any infection?

I am sorry about your daughter's fall. Signs of infection would include pus discharge, a bad taste in the mouth, swelling, and a more intense red around the area of the cut. You can always take her to a dentist to have him evaluate it. There could be teeth that have been traumatized during the fall that may need treatment to prevent infections from trauma to the blood vessels and nerves as they enter the teeth roots. Most regular physicians don't know anything about the mouth and almost avoid it or refer their patients to their dentist. The mouth heals every 7 days so if an infection or problem is getting worse rather than better it is usually pretty obvious. READ MORE

  • What are the ways to close the gap between two frontal teeth?

Invisalign is another form of braces but it doesn't use metal brackets or wires. Instead it uses Clear trays that slip over your teeth. The advantages include no restrictions on food, lower risk of cavities because you can take the trays off to clean the teeth. Faster results as Invisalign can place specific pressures on individual teeth to move and close the gap. With the current smart plastic technology trays can be switched every 4 to 7 days. Another option is veneers/crowns. They can reshape the teeth to close gaps, and change colors and shapes if you would like. The larger the gap the more teeth will need to be prepped to give a more symmetrical esthetic/cosmetic result. READ MORE

  • I feel pain and pressure on my gums. What could this be from?

It could be a dental infection. Visit a dentist and have them take an Xray to determine if an infection is brewing in the site. Other possibilities may include pathologies that an Oral surgeon can send biopsies to a lab for diagnoses. READ MORE

  • What could be the cause of my throbbing tooth pain?

It could either be an infection/abcess under the tooth that is building up in the bone. Because it has no where to go when the tooth root puts pressure on it from chewing it will greatly increase the pressure and pain. Another possibility is a filling/crown/restoration that is getting hit too hard and needs to be adjusted correctly to allow equal pressure loads for the teeth around the mouth. READ MORE

  • How long after my extraction stitches are removed can I drink or eat?

Extraction sites heal over within two weeks normally. After the first week you can usually go back to eating/drinking normally for most extractions. Wisdom teeth extractions take a little longer to heal and are usually good at two weeks. READ MORE

  • How should I prepare for my root canal?

There's nothing you need to avoid aside from cocaine and other street drugs that can cause a life threatening reaction in combination with anesthetic used to numb the tooth so you can have a comfortable experience. Tonight you can prop yourself up so you are not laying completely flat and it can help with the pain caused from the pressure of an infection in the tooth. READ MORE
