A prominent endocrinologist & diabetes specialist, Dr. Solis-Herrera serves as the Medical Director at the Diabetes Clinic in the Medical Arts & Research Center in San Antonio, Texas. Her areas of interest include pathogenesis of diabetes, mechanisms of action of novel anti-diabetic drugs, and cardiometabolic endocrinology.
Passionate about education, she serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Diabetes at the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine. She is also an active collaborator of the Division of Endocrinology, supervising clinical and research fellows, residents, and graduate students.
In 2003, Dr. Solis-Herrera graduated from Autonomous University of Baja California. She then went on to perform her residency at Hospital General Del Estado De Sonora in 2007.
After completing her training in internal medicine and endocrinology in Mexico, where she continues to be board certified, Dr. Solis completed a 4-year postdoctoral fellowship in diabetes and metabolism research at UTHSA under the mentorship of Dr. Ralph DeFronzo. During this time, she acquired highly advanced skills in multiple research techniques, including assessment of beta-cell function with different insulin clamp techniques, insulin sensitivity, measurement of endogenous glucose production, indirect calorimetry, PET/radioactive tracers, MRI/MRS and assessment of myocardial fuel metabolism among others.
Later, she re-trained in internal medicine and endocrinology at UTHSA and is board certified on both. During this time, she continued to pursue her passion in translational and clinical research in diabetes and metabolism, where she has secured significant grant funding.
Actively involved with multiple local, national and international associations, Dr. Solis-Herrera is an active member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology, the American Diabetes Association, and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. Endocrinologists have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body. The common diseases and disorders of the endocrine system that endocrinologists deal with include diabetes mellitus, as well as adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid disorders, among others.
Well published in highly-esteemed peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Solis-Herrera serves as Associate Editor of Diabetes Spectrum and is a member of the JDRF National Grant Review Committee. She is also a Voelcker Scholar.
