Dr. Clifford J Hataway MD
General Practitioner
3508 Melton Road Montgomery Alabama, 36106About
I was on the medical staff in a preventive medicine unit at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for 11 years and achieved the rank of Associate Professor. The practice was a mixture of research and private patients. I worked in the clinic and was responsible for its daily operation. My research was in prevention of hypertension and effects of physical activity on patients with hypertension. I provided routine medical care, prerformed graded treadmill tests, and made presentations about hypertension to the public and physicians. I counseled patients about quitting tobacco and participated in numerous television and radio interviews. I traveled statewide presentations of cardic risk factors for the public and lowering that risk with exercise, avoiding tobacco use, and controlling hypertension.
I took a position at the Alabama State Health Department to focus on expanding the Department's prevention programs and finding funding for additional program to benefit of the public and educate the medical communities on ways to reduce risk factors for chronic disease. My unit established new state programs with funding from the Centers for Health Promotion and Chronic Disease, including tobacco, breast and cervical cancer, cancer registry, arthrtis, diabetes and cardiovascular health. The programs provided support to change policies to reduce tobacco use and promote walking programs. I was assigned to provide oversight of the Health Department's hypertension treatment program for people with low income.
I wrote a draft version of a bill introduced, modified, and passed by the Alabama Legislature to reduce access of youth to tobacco by monitoring illegal purchase of tobacco sales from retail stores.
