About

I am a Board-certified, fellowship-trained Orthopaedic surgeon specializing in the prevention and treatment of sports-related injuries related to the knee, shoulder, hip and elbow. I currently serve as the Chief of Sports Medicine at Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital and am the team physician for a number of regional schools. My goal is to educate you about your injury, help you recover in a safe and efficient manner, and prevent re-injury in the future. Every person has different goals, expectations and desires for their injury and treatment; it is important for you to have an active role in your treatment plan. Together we will formulate a plan that works best for your life and athletic goals.

  • Do orthopaedic surgeons work on shoulders?

Yes, orthopaedic surgeons evaluate shoulder symptoms. Not all orthopaedic surgeons though as there are different sub-specialities in orthopaedic surgery. For instance, a spine specialist may not evaluate shoulder symptoms, but generally a general orthopaedic surgeon, sports medicine specialist like myself, or a shoulder and elbow specialist will see patients for shoulder pain. • What shoulder injuries require surgery?

There are a number of shoulder injuries that may require surgery. Throwing or overhead athletes can be prone to specific injuries mostly related to mechanics and the complexity and involvement of different muscle groups needed for throwing. Some injuries like a "SLAP tear" (superior labrum anterior posterior tear) can be more common in overhead athletes, and depending on the size and physical exam findings, a patient could require surgery to return to their previous level of function. Best to have it fully evaluated by am orthopaedic sports medicine or shoulder specialist. READ MORE

  • What does it mean when your knee is swollen but doesn't hurt?

A swollen knee, even if it's not painful, is usually a sign that something is going on inside your knee joint. Something is irritating the joint and causing it to swell. Could be as simple as regular inflammation or a little arthritis, or more complex like a cartilage tear or a sign of a systemic issue like Lyme disease or a medical condition. Best to have it fully evaluated by an orthopaedic surgeon. READ MORE

  • ACL repair

The ACL is a ligament that gives your knee stability. Younger, active people, especially if you perform cutting/pivoting sports, may find it difficult to return to their full activity because they will feel their knee shift or buckle. Less active or older people many times can perform a lot of activities without issues. So not every ACL tear "needs" surgery. If you have instability, or the feeling that your knee buckles or gives way, with everyday activity or sports that is not good for the knee as it may lead to further damage, and your quality of life is affected, then an ACL reconstruction may be an option.
