The safety of dental anesthesia is a complicated topic. If you're just talking about local anesthesia in most dentist's offices, its extremely safe. If you are talking about general anesthesia, it becomes even more complicated. If general anesthesia (or deep sedation) is performed by an Anesthesiologist (an M.D. or D.O trained in anesthesia) it is extremely safe. If performed by a dentist, it is roughly 10 times more risky. It is certainly possible to have anesthesia while you’re pregnant. It is not advised. As far as is known, anesthetic agents have no adverse effects on fetal development. Nevertheless, it is thought prudent to avoid any exposure except in emergencies. Are you awake during oral surgery?
Patients are awake during some oral surgery procedures. Some can be done with light to moderate sedation plus local anesthesia given by the oral surgeon.
