Frank Avason III, DMD, MS, is a periodontist and general and cosmetic dentist with a private practice in Denver, Colorado. After graduation, he completed a three-year periodontal residency at the University of Kentucky prior to obtaining a Master of Science degree. What is the treatment for dry mouth?
There is no magic bullet to restore saliva flow which, the lack of, is the reason for dry mouth. Both aging and medications induce dry mouth (AKA xerostomia). Best to drink a lot of water and stay hydrated, and also Biotene does help many patients. READ MORE
I had my wisdom tooth removed yesterday. When can I start eating solid food again?
Usually in 3-5 days, most patients return to eating. There is still healing left to happen, but really after 3-5 days, if it doesn't hurt to eat the food, then no problems. READ MORE
What are my options for replacing a missing tooth?
Most likely this is a front tooth. The best option is an implant, although a tooth borne bridge is another option. READ MORE
I am a diabetic and my gums have been bleeding. Is there something to be concerned about?
Yes and yes. What's your A1C? How controlled are you? Also, are you seen by a hygienist for routine maintenance (cleanings)? You are at a increased risk for periodontal disease due to being a diabetic (although well controlled diabetics don't always develop periodontal disease). Bleeding is a sign of inflammation.
