  • My son is 3 years old and has developed cataract. What should I do?

You need to see a pediatric ophthalmologist right away. The cataract can be depriving your child of proper development of vision and lead to amblyopia which is untreated is permanent. Look at your child to make sure his eyes are straight of if they go out or in. Make note of this and tell the doctor when you see him. Your son will need to go to tertiary medical center that has experience with pediatric cataracts and will need contact lenses or spectacles after surgery. A family history and medical metabolic workup will also be needed. This will be the beginning of a long journey. Good Luck. READ MORE

  • Is there an age restriction for a refractive surgery?

FDA approval for Laser Vision Correction surgery is 21. So 12 is too far from that to be evaluated. She should see an eye care professional regularly to get eye exams to measure her refractive state to see if there is any change. A good "Lasik" candidate needs a stable refraction in order to have a good target for laser treatment is she still desires this in the future. There are some new studies where patients with amblyopia can benefit from laser vision correction in order to help with visual development. It would be a good idea to see a pediatric ophthalmologist to check there refraction and look for any strabismus(crossed eyes). Cheers READ MORE

  • What is the safe age for wearing sunglasses?

There is no restriction for children to wear sunglasses. I would encourage it on a beach vacation. UV light has been shown to cause cancer on the skin and on the eye. Make sure the sunglasses have UVA, UVB, and UVC protection. It usually has it on a sticker or tag on the sunglasses. Also, make sure that the fit is good for the child as this may discourage wear. You may have to go to an optician with experience fitting children. The bridge of the nose is usually difficult to fit. Cheers READ MORE

  • What is the cause of dry eyes?

Dry Eye Syndrome is a multifactorial condition. Given your age, it is most likely evaporative loss. For example, staring at a computer causes a subset of Dry Eye called CVS. It is best to use a non-preserved artificial tear at least four times a day and a lubricating ointment at night. If not better, consult an eye care professional where they can do a Dry Eye Workup. One should look at medical history and any medications you could be taking. Cheers READ MORE

  • Could my dry eyes be due to excessive exposure to the computer screen?

Yes, it is most likely caused by computer exposure. This is called CVS, Computer Vision Stare syndrome. You should use a non-preserved artificial tear (they come in vials) at least four times a day. Try to remember to blink. You can buy a desktop humidifier. Also, you can purchase a 3M privacy screen which helps to decrease the glare from the screen. I would also consider seeing an eye care professional to evaluate your dry eye and optimize any medical conditions you may have that may be contributing to your dry eye. Of course you could work less on the computer, but this may not be an option or luxury at your disposal. Sorry, I just had to put an eyedrop in my eyes from staring at the computer too long typing this answer for you. Good Luck! READ MORE

Dr. Que is the best eye doctor. His patients adore him and the community is very thankful to have him. He takes time to explain things to his patients. He is also very good at getting patients to relax during surgery.
