Can calcium deficiency impact teeth?
Calcium deficiency absolutely can impact health and teeth. Besides strengthening bone and teeth, calcium is needed for all the muscles of the body including the heart. Making sure your child gets the proper amount of calcium is imperative. Calcium deficiency can manifest as under developed adult or primary teeth which are discolored and more susceptible to cavities and decay. If your child is lactose intolerant, there are substitutions for dairy products as well as other products like orange juice which contain calcium as well as over the counter calcium supplements. Vitamin D is another way to increase calcium absorption and is in the form of droplets for infants. Make sure you talk to your nutritionist and pediatrician about daily requirements and other options. It is usually in the 1200 mg range for calcium daily but it depends on age. Also, understand with supplementation, there is such a thing as too much and excess calcium can be harmful medically. As your child gets older, daily vitamins can rectify your problem. Hope this helps. READ MORE
How often to use mouth wash?
To whom it may concern, Fluoride rinses will help and can be used twice a day. Talk with your general dentist about it. It depends what the fluoride rinse is as well. If its just crest or listerine then you should be fine. There are prescription fluoride rinses you can get from your general dentist which are stronger and you have to be careful how much fluoride you ingest. Otherwise, over the counter, you should be fine. READ MORE
How can I close the gap between my frontal teeth?
This question is best suited for an orthodontist or a cosmetic dentist and not an oral surgeon, but from what I know, the options to close a 2 mm gap are to undergo orthodontic braces/Invisalign to shorten the gap and align your dentition, or veneers/ cosmetic anterior crowns fabricated to fill the gap with tooth structure. Both options are tedious and expensive but in my opinion a good orthodontist can realign your teeth appropriately. READ MORE
Is reflux giving me bad breath?
To Whom it may concern, You are right. Chronic gastro-esophageal reflux Disease (GERD) CAN cause bad breath. The food digested is broken down by bacteria in your gut. The back flow of undigested food, the bacteria, and the broken down food up your esophagus emits an odor causing bad breath and of course and dissolve and erode your teeth. Speak with your primary physician about going on an H2 blocker or Proton pump inhibitor for serious GERD. This will reduce the acidity of the contents of your reflux but you also have to make some lifestyle adjustments. As you said, just taking Nexium might decrease discomfort but won=E2=80=99t remove the bad breath issue. Some adjustments you can try are listed below:=20 1) stop smoking (if applicable)- smoking loosens the musculature at the junction of you stomach and esophagus (decreases lower esophageal tone) making it easier to reflux contents 2) wait 2 - 3 hours after eating before laying down to avoid back flow - allow gravity to help keep the contents down 3) eat smaller meals rather then one large dinner 4) try chewing gum or mint losanges to help contents stay down and to hep freshen breath 5) Try brushing your tongue more often after meals. Hope this helps. Dr. Jeff Litman Daley Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery associates READ MORE
Is water-flossing as effective as regular flossing?
My personal opinion is that nothing beats regular flossing 2 times a day and following with your hygienist/dentist every 6 months. All the other options out there are more marketing gimmicks. I am just the surgeon so you should ask this to your personal general dentist and hygienist who are experts in this field. Jeff Litman DMD READ MORE
Wisdom teeth removal
Oral surgeons are specialized dentists that have 4-6 years of head and neck surgery residency training making them the most competent to handle difficult impacted wisdom teeth. Dentists are trained to extract teeth but may not have that experience to handle complicated wisdom teeth that may be near vital structures in the head and neck. There's nothing wrong with the general dentists pulling wisdom teeth if they feel competent to do so. Talk to your dentist and see if they are willing to. Most of the time they will refer to a specialist if the tooth is under the gum and bone due to the surgical complexity. Hope this helps. Jeff Litman DMD READ MORE
Adult tooth is loose. What should I do?
In order to save the tooth it must be repositioned within 2-4 hours and stabilized with braces. This must be evaluated immediately if you would like to salvage the tooth. If the tooth fails you can always obtain an implant later on. Very swollen and red gums after routine dental cleaning
To whom it may concern, Thank you for your question. It is perfectly normal to be swollen and have red gums after a cleaning for a week, especially if you haven't been to the dentist in a while. It could mean that since you last had a cleaning, there was more calculus in deeper areas. This inflammatory process should dissipate in a week. It's important to inform your dentist of these issues and follow up if the swelling continues. Jeff Litman DMD READ MORE
