  • How can I help my child's fear of the dentist?

Without knowing her history at the dentist and what work she has had done in the past it is harder for me to answer your question. A general answer and what I have done with some kids that have extreme anxiety is to just do happy visits until I earn the trust of the kid. We would just do small things. Like ride in the chair and play with my air water and the suction. Baby steps and many happy visit until she had a relationship with me and like I said trusts me and had only fun appointments. This has worked and if takes time and the insurance doesn’t pay for happy visits but they don’t cost much. It’s worth it in the long term as she will learn it’s not a scary place. One kid we did almost 15 of these visits until he felt comfortable and had no anxiety for cleanings. Building this positive relationship now is important for her life long view of dentist. That’s my advice. READ MORE

  • Can I do teeth whitening with a front half fake incisor?

You whiten and then crown. The crown will not change colours so if you had it made first it would match your teeth but then if you whiten and the teeth get lighter then the crown stays the same colour and it will be darker and the only way to lighten it to match would be to redo the crown READ MORE

  • Do fillings need to be replaced?

If it's not broken don't fix it. Every time you remove a filling you lose a little tooth structure and run the risk of sensitivity or nerve damage READ MORE

  • Bloody painful gums, what should I do?

Gums bleed when they are inflamed. You should keep flossing and brushing but get a professional cleaning so the bacteria that your brush and floss can reach can be removed by a hygienist and the inflammation should go away. READ MORE

  • Can you suggest some way to reduce sensitivity?

Avoid whitening products and if you are a clenched or grinder get a perio splint READ MORE

  • What is the right age for kids to brush their teeth on their own?

Kids don't have the dexterity to properly clean their own teeth until they are around 7 years old. Then they should be monitored by you the parent to make sure they are brushing all the teeth and all the teeth surfaces. You should also be flossing your kids teeth READ MORE

  • I am having excessive saliva secretion in my mouth. Does it mean an infection?

Increased salivation is not a symptom of an infection READ MORE

  • Can brushing my teeth with salt whiten my teeth?

No, this is not true. READ MORE

  • Can using mouthwash frequently negatively impact the health of my teeth?

If it has alcohol in it then yes. But alcohol free mouthwash. Really mouthwash does very little in terms of cleaning your teeth and it does not replace brushing and flossing READ MORE

  • Are cavities possible in baby teeth?

Yes, absolutely, and it is one of the most common preventable bacterial infections and, if not fixed, I would consider neglectful. If your kid had an infection in any other part of the body, parents would fix it, but for some reason, they think, why fix the infection if it's going to fall out one day? People who think this way are letting the bacteria get into their kid's bloodstream and setting them up for possible abscesses and pain and decreased nutrition, etc. Cavities in the primary dentition should be fixed and the child should then have a healthy start to their digestive tract, their mouth. • Do dentists offer services to the uninsured?

Hi I can not speak for all dentists but where I am from many do offer payment plans. Some like myself offer the plan interest free. Some refer to a third party that offers the payment plan. This type of third party payment usually comes with very high interest rates and possibly administrative fees. You should be able to call around and find a dentist that doesn't practise this way and just spread the payments out without charging you extra. Again I have no idea where you live or which country but in many parts of Canada where I live that is how it is often done. READ MORE

Areas of research

  • Not so much research as educating new moms. I strongly try to have new parents understand the effect of those people in the babies life's who will be holding the baby close how important I feel it is that they have healthy mouths I also try to tell parents the importance of Floride supplements for their kids now that it has been taking out of our drinking water.

I would like to be part of the prenatal classes parents take so I could talk about the importance of cleaning their babies and toddlers mouths, how not to get bottle decay, how bacteria can spread from parents to babies and Floride. I am hoping to be able to be a part of prenatal classes and am working to set this up.
