  • Why am I out of breath when I'm climbing up stairs?

Hi, many possibilities. Have you been pregnant recently? Do you sleep well at night (obstructive sleep apnea), body weight, asthma/allergies, anxiety? Assuming all of the above have been addressed, then we look at cardiac causes. Any family history of premature heart disease or weak heart? From a cardiology standpoint, would get a good history and physical exam as well as a 12-lead ekg, then an echocardiogram of the heart to look at heart function, valves, or fluid around the heart. Also, would consider pulmonary function tests, with all the above. A diagnosis should be obtained. READ MORE

  • Are there any risk factors for a stroke?

Hi, At your age, it's low unless there are certain issues. Is there congenital heart disease in your family? Also, do you have heart issues? Finally, any blood disorders that would prematurely cause clots? Other than that, I would say you're low risk; stress causes other issues, but not a stoke unless it significantly elevates your blood pressure. I would get a good history, physical exam, blood tests, ekg, echocardiogram, and go from there, but I would say you're low risk. READ MORE

  • Could kidney disease cause cardiac issues?

Hi, and yes. Dialysis itself is like a stress test every session. Also, it can cause fluid shifts that can precipitate cardiac issues, ekg changes may occur. Long-term dialysis in and of itself can lead to heart disease, as the same issues that cause renal disease also causes cardiovascular issues as well. If it's only two weeks, would get a good history, physical exam, blood tests, ekg, echocardiogram, and stress testing. Depending on age, would consider being on a transplant list (good operation). Also, make sure he is not diabetic or insulin resistant. Also, a base line renal ultrasound, and 24 hour urine studies. READ MORE

  • Do blood thinners cause excessive sleepiness?

Hi, No, not to my knowledge, but after surgery, patients get (appropriate) meds for depression and pain, as well as anti-hypertension, if combined, can lower blood pressure, and make someone feel tired. Also, make sure no underlying sleep disorders or any combination that would cause those symptoms, normally not from blood thinners. Look into what I sent. READ MORE

  • Can blood pressure medicines cause chest pain?

Hi , I don't know your meds, but not usually unless its lowering you blood pressure. Chest pain has many causes; chest wall (inflammation) small vessel disease, musculoskeletal, gastric (reflux), anxiety, and true cardiac . At your age, unless there are many risk factors, not likely. I would get a great history, physical, blood tests, ekg, echocardiogram, and maybe a stress echo? Also, look up a test called soltera gram (looks at endothelial function), pulmonary function tests may be needed. The answer is there. READ MORE

  • My mother is suffering from breathlessness but the 2-d echo shows normal. Why?

She may have diastolic dysfunction (heart does not relax), would get pulmonary function tests, a good history, physical exam, blood tests, and make sure no sleep apnea or hypertension, and excessive weight. READ MORE

  • Does the fitness tracker band show the actual heart rate?

Yes I think so, but you can take your pulse for 15 sec and multiply, times 4. READ MORE

  • Can BP medicines cause chest pain?

No, not likely, would get a good history, physical exam, blood tests, and echocardiogram, and go from there, but no. READ MORE

  • Do blood thinners cause excessive sleepiness?

No, it should not. Make sure not too many meds given to lower blood pressure, also after surgery meds are given for anxiety and pain, which can lower blood pressure. I would get a good history, physical exam, blood tests, review meds, ekg and echocardiogram. READ MORE

  • How can I tell if my chest pain is from running or from an issue with my heart?

Hi, you need a cardiac workup based on your symptoms. You need a good history, physical exam, risk evaluation, ekg, labs, echo and a stress test. May consider starting asaprin , but a workup is in order. READ MORE

  • My mother is suffering from breathlessness but the 2-d echo shows normal. Why?

Hi, Well, there are patients who have normal heart function, but the heart does not relax well (diastolic dysfunction). The heart not relaxing may be related to age and hypertension. Also, other issues may be asthma, allergies, sleep apnea, or obesity. My advice wound be a history, physical exam, blood tests, looking into what has been stated, and reviewing the echo. Also would consider a 6 min walk test, amd maybe a stress test; make sure she is not diabetic. The answer is in what I texted; also, last resort is anxiety. READ MORE

  • What is the difference between a bypass surgery and an angioplasty?

Without knowing your anatomy (coronary) I would think surgery, most important, are diabetes, where the disease is located, your dad's symptoms, and his heart function. Not an easy question, but a good start. I can help more if you like! READ MORE

  • My father suddenly has symptoms like sweating and uneasiness. Could it mean something?

Many times after dinner, the diaphragm can irritate the heart and cause palpitations, but I do recommend a cardiac workout (blood tests, echocardiogram, holter, and maybe a stress test), if not more. READ MORE

  • Why do I have palpitations?

Yes I would check basic lab tests, including hormones, and a complete physical exam. In addition, would get a holter monitor to see what these palpitations truly are. READ MORE

  • Why is my dad having cold hands and feet after a long flight?

It’s possible, but must look at risk factors (i.e., prior disease, lipids, high blood pressure, peripheral vascular disease, and more). I would recommend a cardiovascular workup, echo and perhaps nuclear imaging, can give so much good information at low risk, always consider good natural resources. READ MORE

  • What could be the reason for increased heart rate of my wife who is 5 months pregnant?

Hi, during pregnancy the diaphragm may push near the heart causing palpations, it’s normal and maybe a female child. However, one must always consider a pregnancy induced cardiopathy, and I would recommend and echo and holter monitor, normally at this time of pregnancy it’s benign. Also, the age of the mother, and how many if any prior pregnancies, again most of the time it resolves with delivery. May also consider heart variably monte ring of the fetus, by your obgyn. Normally not an issue if above measures are considered. READ MORE

  • Is pleurisy a disease? How long does a pleuritic chest pain last?

Pleurisy is usually a result of inflammation around the heart or lung. Most of the time it’s self limited and has a direct cause (infection), it’s treated by treating the underlying problem, and perhaps anti inflammatory meds, for the most part it’s not genetic unless there are reasons why anyone would have infections maybe an immunologist consult can be considered. READ MORE

  • Why do I suddenly get palpitations at night?

A complete history and physical exam is in order. With palpations (even though you're young) an echo and halter monitor should be obtained. A thought would be hormonal blood tests (16 of them) should be considered, rule out premature menopause if that is possible, also I would get basic blood tests, and go from there. READ MORE

  • Xarelto

Very good question, it’s risky, the question is why are you both on it. The issue is there is no true monitor as a good blood leveling. It’s influenced by several issues, so there is a bleeding risk, the use is truly patient specific, not my favorite blood thinner, be careful. READ MORE

  • Is there any difference between heartburn and chest pain?

That is an excellent question. “Heart burn“ mostly occurs after meals and can be relived with antacids, but I would never think with her age and other risk factors that she may have, that it’s solely heartburn. I strongly recommend an ekg, routine labs, echocardiogram, and a stress test. Also important are the questions is the pain with activity? Relieved with rest? Quality, duration, location, duration, frequency, what makes it better or worse, after that point a good cardiologist can use that info to better focus. READ MORE
