  • I have a new pet at home and a baby of 2 years. Are there any precautions to be taken?

Not really, the main thing is safety from dog bites and injuries of that nature. Richard Aballay READ MORE

  • When does implantation bleeding occur in an expecting mother?

Implantation bleeding usually occurs at the latest about day 22-23 from day 1 (first day of bleeding) of the expected cycle. It depends where she is in that expected cycle. If it is it should only last a day or two. If longer, I’d go in and f/u with your OB/GYN to make sure all is good. Richard Aballay READ MORE

  • My stomach seems extremely hard. What could it be?

Could be a hernia, but without physical exam hard to tell. Would recommend seeing your PCP or go to ER if it worsens as it could be a sign of something worse. Richard Aballay READ MORE

  • Could my constipation be due to vitamin D supplements?

High levels of calcium in the blood can cause constipation. So, the answer to her question is yes, vitamin D can cause constipation. However, taking the supplement at the recommended dose should not cause any problems. You can take up to 1000 IU of vitamin D3 a day without any side effects. Richard Aballay READ MORE

  • How long does it take for a bacterial eye infection to subside?

The question is whether you truly had a bacterial infection to start with. Most conjuntivitis is viral or allergies. Also, you could have a clogged tear duct. All of which would not respond to antibiotic eye drops. If indeed you have a bacterial eye infection there could be bacterial resistance or need a different antibiotic. Would be wise to go and see a different practitioner for a second opinion. Would recommend an ophthalmologist if able. Hope this helps! Richard Aballay, MD READ MORE

  • Is there a connection between breast reduction, asthma and back pain?

The connection between macromastia (large breasts) and neck shoulder and back pain is well established in the medical literature. Any search on google will pull up tons of information. The main reason women get the procedure is because of the chronic pain. The asthma association is more rare, but there is some evidence that it improves chest wall compliance leading to increased pulmonary function (see Int Surg. 2014 Jul-Aug; 99(4): 300–304.) Hope this helps. Richard Aballay, MD READ MORE

  • My symptoms started two months ago with dizziness that progressed?

First of all, is it lightheaded dizzy or vertigo? Is it positional in nature? Sinus congestion? Ringing in the ears? There are so many things this could be and a thorough history needs to be taken likely followed with some basic blood work and of course a physical exam. I can further discuss with you or go see your doctor. Richard Aballay READ MORE

  • Why do I have a fever after my flu shot?

The flu shot can cause low grade fever lasting 1-2 days. This is not to be a cause of alarm. Since the shot contains inactive virus particles you cannot get the flu from the vaccine. If the fever does persist you may want to see a physician as it is likely unrelated to the vaccine and could be sign of another infection unrelated to the vaccine. Richard Aballay READ MORE

  • Diabetes affecting my baby

According to the NIDDK: A baby’s organs, such as the brain, heart, kidneys, and lungs, start forming during the first 8 weeks of pregnancy. High blood glucose levels can be harmful during this early stage and can increase the chance that your baby will have birth defects, such as heart defects or defects of the brain or spine. High blood glucose levels during pregnancy can also increase the chance that your baby will be born too early, weigh too much, or have breathing problems or low blood glucose right after birth. High blood glucose also can increase the chance that you will have a miscarriage or a stillborn baby.1 Stillborn means the baby dies in the womb during the second half of pregnancy. But as long as your sugar has been tightly controlled during pregnancy chances are baby will be fine. Richard Aballay, MD READ MORE

  • Can asthma go away?

Although officially asthma does not go away we do commonly see it "go away" during teenage years and sometimes can reappear in adulthood again depending on lifestyle choices, i.e. Smoking etc. I'm not sure you may have had the right diagnosis, could have been bronchitis which can appear as asthma but does improve with treatment and "goes away". To properly know if you have asthma the diagnosis requires usually a test call spirometry. Some family doctors have this in their office but some will refer you to a pulmonologist. If you have not had this done I would highly recommend it if you are symptomatic. Dr. Aballay READ MORE
