Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Robert J. Meislin, who serves patients in New York, New York.

Being a reputable, board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Meislin specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopic treatment of knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, and hip injuries. He sees patients at the Sports Medicine Center at NYU Langone Orthopedic Center in New York, New York. It is his goal to design evaluations and treatments that help people achieve active, pain-free lifestyles.

“I offer cartilage resurfacing techniques to repair damaged cartilage. In addition, I perform ligament repair and reconstruction for torn ligaments, as well as meniscal transplants to replace the meniscus in a knee joint. I also perform shoulder surgeries to repair labral and rotator cuff tears, including arthroscopic latarjet procedures for glenoid bone loss and arthroscopic acromioclavicular reconstruction. For patients with labral tears and femoroacetabular impingement, a condition in which hip bones are irregularly shaped, causing joint damage, I perform hip procedures.” as stated by the doctor.

In his practice, Dr. Meislin feels that the most important aspect of treatment is having an open dialogue with patients. The first thing he wants people to tell him is how their injuries affect their lifestyles. After discussing this, he explains the diagnosis, how their condition developed, and the method through which each treatment option can help them. He firmly believes that knowledgeable and informed patients make the best decisions about their treatment.

In addition to treating people with sports-related injuries at NYU Langone, Dr. Meislin serves as an orthopedic consultant for the San Francisco Giants, USA Baseball, and the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball team. He also performs sports medicine research to improve shoulder stabilization and develop meniscal scaffolds to reduce postoperative knee pain.

Following the completion of his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Economics at Columbia University, Dr. Meislin went on to obtain his medical degree from the New York University Grossman School of Medicine in 1985. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in 1991, followed by his residency in sports medicine at The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital in 1992.

Attributing his success to having good teachers, mentors, and supportive peers, the doctor is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

Since 2002, Dr. Meislin has been serving as a Clinical Associate Professor within the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the New York University Grossman School of Medicine. His research interests include articular cartilage, biomechanics, exercise physiology, as well as arthroscopic shoulder, elbow, and knee procedures.

Among his professional affiliations, he is a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, and the International Cartilage Repair Society.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. They work in clinical and hospital settings.
