Dr. Alexis M Cruz Chacón is a faculty member of Hospital Español Auxilio Mutuo and director of the Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program at the institution. He is also an attending physician at the San Juan City Hospital Hematology and Medical Oncology fellowship program and an investigator for the Puerto Rico NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) at that institution. 

His medical practice is dedicated to blood and marrow hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) of adult patients (autologous and allogeneic), long-term follow-up and management of complications after allogeneic HSCT, and evaluation plus treatment of hematologic malignancies (Leukemia, Myelodysplastic syndrome, Myeloproliferative disorders, Lymphoma, Multiple Myeloma).

What do you attribute your success to?

  • Lot of sacrifice and hard work. Like Albert Einstein said: \"In the midst of difficulty lies opportunity\". My biggest motivation for my carreer and professional goals had been the need for better therapies for adult patients with hematologic malignancies in Puerto Rico, including clinical trials and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

  • As specialist in adult blood and marrow transplantation, Dr. Cruz focuses much of his clinical and research interests to the treatment of hematologic malignancies with novel molecular therapies and immunotherapies, development of new transplant conditioning and post-transplant maintenance regimens, and expanding blood and marrow transplantation and other therapies for hematologic malignancies to the elderly population.

  • Dr. Cruz is an attending physician at the San Juan City Hospital Hematology and Medical Oncology fellowship program. He is also an associate professor (Ad Honorum) for the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine at the Hematology and Medical Oncology fellowship program.
