Dr. Andrea P. Watkins MD, MPH
Psychiatrist | Psychiatry
10400 Connecticut Ave Suite 500 Kensington Maryland, 20895About
I am a practicing Psychiatrist with a specific interest in mood and anxiety disorders. However, I find enjoyment in the practice of continued education and treatment of the entire spectrum of psychiatric disorders. I have engaged in research specifically related to depression in the African American Female population, Schizophrenia, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I believe in a holistic approach to the treatment of psychiatric disorders and believe strongly in a "full body disease model" in which diet, nutrition, and other co-existing medical disorders are to be considered in the treatment plan. I use the term "neurobiological disorders" in my description of psychiatric illnesses as I believe there is clear evidence for systemic involvement of the nervous system as integrated with other biological systems that ultimately lead to the symptomatology that presents itself in psychiatric patients. In addition to treatment and management, I have a profound passion for reducing stigma as it relates to mental illness. This is confounded by my overarching interest in the dynamics of the healthcare system, its policies, and the cultural considerations that impact delivery, access, and utilization of psychiatric services.
