  • Can a chiropractor fix uneven hips?

If your hips are uneven, from some types of neuromusculoskeletal issues, the answer is, most likely. In addition to correcting any related spine or other joint fixations, part of correcting your issue may include custom orthotics if malalignment of your feet is involved, physical therapy for a variety of muscle and nerve causes and specific exercises to strengthen or relax involved muscles. A sound nutrition program, including any necessary weight loss or nutrient support specific to treating the cause of your uneven hips. Dr. Surprise READ MORE

  • Can I crack my own neck safely?

Please don't 'crack' your own neck. Or any other joint for that matter. All "cracking joints" does is: 1. Makes hypermobile joints more so and does nothing to put motion into the fixated/stuck joints in the region which is almost always the issue. 2. Gives temporary relief from pain and discomfort because brain chemicals (endorphins and enkephalins) are stimulated. The underlying problem of the fixated joint(s) is not helped. READ MORE

  • Does chiropractic treatment relieve stress?

Depending on the kind of stress, Chiropractic care can relieve. Most often used to alleviate musculoskeletal stressors associated with spine, joint and muscle dysfunction, when an adjustment relieves nerve interference to organs, especially the adrenal and other hormone producing organs, then Chiropractic care can help with the 'stress' associated with work, lifestyle and other stressors. • How young is too young to see a chiropractor?

Having adjusted a minutes old child after a high forceps delivery with good results and many kids of all ages over the years, I'd say never too young if an adjustment is needed. To assuage your thoughts on this, the way one adjusts anyone young or old varies on what needs to be done. Find a DC who is specifically trained in pediatric adjusting (https://icpa4kids.com) or has a lot of experience with children. Dr. Juanee Surprise, DC. NMD, IMD, DCBCN, CTTN READ MORE

  • What chiropractic adjustments are effective for neck pain?

The chiropractic adjustments for neck pain are the ones that work! The type of adjustment necessary for any spine problem is based on what the problem is. This is determined by the chiropractor after consulting with you to learn the history behind the problem, an exam and usually X-rays to determine if adjusting is appropriate and give insight as to what type of adjustment technique to use. There is no one size fits all. Dr. Juanee Surprise, DC. NMD, IMD, DCBCN, CTTN READ MORE

  • What can I do about my back pain?

Pain is a symptom. It is telling you something is not right. Here are your choices: 1. Continue to do what you are doing, which apparently hasn't helped and may actually be making the problem worse. 2. Take OTC pain medication, even natural sources (CBD, Tumeric, HP remedies, etc.) which will not correct the underlying cause. Drugs also come with side effects which can cause even more symptoms. 3. See a primary care physician (MD, DO, DC) to determine the cause and recommended treatment. Research has shown that chiropractic treatment gives better outcomes for most back pain and does not include drugs or surgery, so it would, in my opinion, be the best alternative to seek help initially. • Can chiropractic help with nerve pain?

Finding out the cause/source of your son's nerve pain is the first step in determining what treatment protocol will help him. A chiropractor should be able to do this and guide you in obtaining help for him. Dr. Juanee Surprise, DC. NMD, IMD, DCBCN, CTTN READ MORE

  • Could posture cause lower back pain in children?

Posture can cause back/neck pain. Back/neck pain can cause posture change. It's often the chicken or the egg theory as to which came first. It would be appropriate to have your son's posture evaluated by a general chiropractor who cares for children or one who is board certified in chiropractic pediatrics. The sooner the better, since some scoliosis problems can best be corrected before completion of puberty. Dr. Juanee Surprise, DC. NMD, IMD, DCBCN, CTTN READ MORE

  • Is chiropractic treatment safe for a 60-year-old?

Chiropractic is one of the safest treatments in the world. It can do a world of good for those with back pain according to all the research without the side effects of drugs or the complication of surgery. Age is not the question. I have personally adjusted a just born infant, a 98 year old, and a 410 pound patient and everything in between. As to your grandfather, a chiropractor will determine if it is appropriate to adjust him before he/she does so. And know, there are many chiropractic techniques, some with little or no force at all and most DCs know several and will choose what's right for him. Dr. Juanee Surprise, DC. NMD, IMD, DCBCN, CTTN READ MORE

  • At what age is an adjustment safe for children?

There is no such thing as 'normal' growing pain in children. The symptom of pain, especially frequent or chronic should be evaluated to find the CAUSE, not merely cover it up with a pill. Infants (including newborns) and children can safely be adjusted by a chiropractor when history and examination warrant. Pediatrics, including adjusting, is taught as part of the basic chiropractic curriculum. Like allopathic doctors, chiropractic doctors have post graduate programs for doctors who wish to specialize in a particular area. Pediatrics is one. For more information or to find a pediatric specialist near you visit: http://icpa4kids.org http://acapedscouncil.org/ http://icapediatrics.com/ It is my opinion, based on over 40 years of experience, including the care of my own children and grandchildren, that all kids should be evaluated by a chiropractor in the first couple of months of life to check for birth trauma (which is very common). And, of course, whenever there is any traumatic event from falls (off bed, out of tree, off bike or horse), horseplay, or sports a check up trip to a chiropractor is appropriate. Also, I recommend having a child evaluated around puberty by a chiropractor (spine expert) to check for development of scoliosis as early treatment will have the best results. • Will I ever get relief pain from hip pain?

My answer is......most likely. Postpartum low back, sacroiliac and hip pain are fairly common for a variety of reason. Be sure to ask the chiropractor you see to check your sacroiliac joints for fixation and associated muscles, particularly the hip flexors for tender/trigger points. READ MORE

  • How to fix bad posture?

Bad posture becomes habit for a variety of reasons. First, thing would be to visit a chiropractor to determine if there is an anatomical reason, such as scoliosis, for your posture. Ask if one of several types of electro therapy and/or a posture support or brace is appropriate. READ MORE

  • Do chiropractic adjustments help with chronic lower back pain?

Chiropractic has been shown to be the best treatment for LBP in several research studies. There are several different techniques specific for different causes of LBP. Therefore, a correct diagnosis for the cause of his LBP, should dictate the type of treatment. Also, for temporary relief, a high quality, standardized curcumin has been shown to work as well or better than Tylenol for pain without the potentially sever side effects. READ MORE

  • My daughter sits with her back slanted. How can her posture be corrected?

In my opinion, the first thing would be to find out if there is a biomechanical cause such as scoliosis. Depending on the cause, various treatments may be able to help correct her problem. I would recommend seeing a chiropractor who works with children. In my experience, chiropractic treatment usually does a better job than allopathic medicine for most spinal misalignment issues. • Can a chiropractor help me get relief from muscle pain?

Depending on the cause of your muscle pain, a chiropractor may be the best person to look to for help. It is surely not a deficiency of NSAIDs, muscle relaxers, or opioids!! Also, if trauma, overexertion, and nerve interference are not the cause, a very likely cause is nutrient deficiency with magnesium and B vitamins being at the top of the list. Or a lifestyle issue like obesity, being sedentary, etc. Many chiropractors can counsel you on nutrition issues. There are also chiropractors who are board certified in nutrition, like myself, who can definitely help you find out if nutrition is a involved. Dr. Juanee Surprise, DC. • Is yoga recommended to treat sciatica?

Without knowing the underlying cause(s) of your sciatica, it is impossible to answer whether yoga or any exercise can help. There can be several reasons for sciatica. Assuming your doctor(s) has ruled out pathology that would require surgery, etc., and if you have tried the allopathic medical route with no resolution in 6 months, you might want to look at other options, including chiropractic medicine, oriental medicine and even natural medicine ways to treat pain that won't have the potential side effects of prescription drugs and OTC medicines. Time may be of the essence since nerve damage can become permanent. I wish you well and hope you find a successful treatment for your sciatica. Dr. Juanee Surprise, DC. • Can you suggest some medication for treating my shoulder pain?

Drugs, prescription or OTC, won't treat the CAUSE of your shoulder pain. If you truly believe working long hours is the cause, then look at your work schedule and decide what you will do to work fewer hours. However, many people work long hours and don't experience shoulder pain. Why do you? Let's list likely causes and see if correcting any you have fixes the shoulder pain: 1. Work station is not ergonomically set up for your body to function without excess strain. Tense neck from cell phone use is becoming a classic example of poor ergonomics causing pain. Go online and find out how to set up your station ergonomically, including your desk chair. 2. Old or new macro or micro trauma (car accident, falls, bed pillow, watching TV with head propped on couch arm, holding phone with head tilted, etc.), which may require a chiropractic evaluation and treatment, if indicated. Physical therapy modalities and massage can give relief, but rarely treat the cause. 3. Nutrition insufficiencies, especially of magnesium, calcium and/or vitamins B and C (whole, not just ascorbic acid) 4. An inflammatory diet high in sugar and commercially raised animal protein, lack of fresh, organic fruits and veggies, dehydration from inadequate water intake, too much caffeine and alcohol, and eating processed junk foods. 5. Poor handling of stress and stressors. There are several techniques to help decrease the effects. My favorite is the Silva Method. While you are figuring out and fixing the above, curcumin has been shown to be equal to or better than Tylenol in relieving pain. There are other natural products that relieve pain, too. All without the potential side effects associated with NSAIDs and other pain relief drugs. Just be aware, natural pain relief is not fixing the cause either. I wish you pain-free work days. • I feel my posture has bent after delivery. What can I do?

You may not be able to correct your posture on your own. You find yourself slouching and when you do and try to align your body in good posture, it hurts. So, as soon as you quit actively forcing yourself to better posture, you go back to the slouch. Your body doesn't want you to feel pain, so you have acquired this new slouch position to take stress off some area. Since it has occurred after delivery, it may well be due to some musculoskeletal changes associated with your pregnancy and/or delivery. The best time to have had this checked and probably corrected easily would have been in the first 30 days postpartum for several reasons. At this time, however, my first suggestion would be to see a chiropractor who works with and treats pregnant females, as they should know the most likely underlying causes for your problem. X-rays to check for abnormal curve formation would be appropriate along with a thorough musculoskeletal examination. They should be able to explain your problem, recommend a corrective program including exercises, and get you back to a "normal" posture. If some pathology is detected, they may refer you for a medical evaluation. However, my 38 years of experience tells me that, till proven otherwise, chiropractic treatment would be the best for you. • Very tight neck

There are many possible causes of a 'tight feeling' in the neck. Have you been evaluated to rule out any medical conditions as a cause? If none were found, and if regular massage treatment by a good therapist has not helped, then it is pretty safe to say it is not 'just a muscle problem.' It is certainly not a deficiency of muscle relaxers or NSAIDs. Since joint fixation can be a cause of tight feeling in the neck, a Chiropractic evaluation would be appropriate. Chiropractic doctors are experts in determining and correcting joint fixations. They can also give you advice on posture and exercises that could be of benefit and bring you relief. Biochemical imbalance from nutrient deficiency or occasional excess can also contribute to the symptom of 'tightness.' Consulting with a clinical nutrition expert would be appropriate. • Do chiropractors typically take x-rays?

It is common for a Chiropractor to take x-rays prior to making recommendations for treatment or adjusting fixated joints. In my opinion, it is a good practice to do appropriate radiologic and laboratory tests to ascertain if and what treatment or recommendations are most appropriate for each patient.
