Dr. Abdul Qayyum Rana is a Canadian Neurologist who specializes in Parkinson’s disease and Movement disorders. After finishing his neurology training and fellowship in Parkinson’s disease, he started the “Parkinson’s clinic of Eastern Toronto” in Toronto, Canada, a multidisciplinary facility for the care of Parkinson’s patients. He always had a great passion for Parkinson’s disease. In addition to his clinical work, he began educating patients about the debilitating effects of this disabling neurological illness. He started volunteering to give lectures, conduct seminars and educational sessions for Parkinson’s patient free of charge. He says “I used to wonder as what are the biggest obstacles in the delivery of better medial care to Parkinson’s patients?” “At times, I thought it could be issues with compliance, lack of technology, or something else?” However it did not take him long to reach his conclusions. He says” when I traveled to different parts of world and saw various situations Parkinson’s patients were afflicted with, I found answer to all my questions”. “At the global level, lack of education and poverty are two main epidemics affecting the care of Parkinson’s patients” So he decided to start a non-profit organization to address the educational needs of Parkinson’s patients from all communities. World Parkinson’s Program was founded by Dr.Rana in 2008 and it focuses on improving the medical care of Parkinson’s patients through education, providing supportive services, and advocacy in all parts of the world. World Parkinson’s Program has been serving Parkinson’s Community at the global level since then.
Lack of proper education about Parkinson’s and poverty are two main factors negatively impacting the care of Parkinson’s patients around the globe. Therefore, World Parkinson’s Program makes its mission to provide multilingual educational literature including brochures in many languages, supportive services including medications, walkers, canes, wheelchairs, and other educational and healthcare supplies to those Parkinson’s patients around the globe who are not able to afford purchasing them. Currently the educational brochures written by Dr.Rana are available in more than 15 languages, and are used in more than 50 countries around the world serving the diverse communities. World Parkinson’s Program has more than 50 chapters around the world, and has helped to establish various Parkinson’s Education Clubs in many countries. “Those who fight Parkinson’s with knowledge always find solutions” is the central theme of World Parkinson’s Program.
Of those inhabiting our planet, approximately half of are living on less than $2.50 a day. The struggles of those living with Parkinson’s are even greater, because additional costs of medication and supportive devices take a serious toll on their quality of life. There are about 10 million individuals affected with Parkinson’s around the world. The number of Parkinson's patients will double by 2031.
This is a grim situation, but a situation World Parkinson’s Program is determined to turn around. Like every other great task, it cannot be accomplished alone. As fellow humans, as one big family, World Parkinson’s Program asks you to lend a hand. World Parkinson’s Program needs your help, needs you behind it, with it and alongside it. World Parkinson’s Program asks your support to improve someone’s life today, and your conscience will certainly thank you for it.
