Dr. Thomas Alexander Whitaker M.D.

Thomas Alexander Whitaker, MD, FACS, FAAO, is a remarkable ophthalmologist and the founding partner of Eastern Carolina Regional Eye Center in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. A graduate of Presbyterian College, Dr. Whitaker went on to the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine, and received his medical degree in 1970. Dr. Whitaker served as a U.S. Naval Flight Surgeon before completing his Post-Doctoral training as a resident in Ophthalmology at the Combined Program in Ophthalmology at the University of Alabama and Post-Doctoral studies at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Whitaker has been certified by both the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Eye Surgery. Dr. Whitaker has been in private practice in the Myrtle Beach area since 1977. In addition to his clinical appointments, Dr. Whitaker maintains memberships in several professional societies, including the American Medical Association, the Southern Medical Association, the S. C. Medical Association, the Horry County Medical Society, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Alumni Council, the Duke University Eye Center Advisory Board, and the South Carolina Society of Ophthalmology. Dr. Whitaker is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and Counselor to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. His areas of special interests include cataract and IOL surgery with astigmatism, diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma including (SLT) laser, and medical retina including diabetic and macular degeneration. Dr. Whitaker's hospital affiliations include Grande Dunes Surgery Center in Myrtle Beach, SC, and Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC. Dr. Whitaker is presently a clinical instructor in Ophthalmology at the Medical University of South Carolina. He has been chosen on numerous occasions as one of the Best Doctors in America.
