Get to know Pulmonologist Dr. Richard Prager, who serves the Miami, Florida area at several local hospitals. Dr. Prager received his medical degree from Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University and continued his studies with a residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and a fellowship in critical care medicine from the Jacksonville Health Education Program. Dr. Prager has been in practice for over forty years and specializes in pulmonology. Affiliated with multiple Miami area hospitals, including Baptist Hospital of Miami and Homestead Hospital, Dr. Prager holds a Florida medical license through 2020. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine, critical care medicine and pulmonary diseases. Throughout his career, he has undertaken research and presented his findings in prestigious medical journals, like The Journal of Intensive Care Medicine. To say current in his field, Dr. Prager maintains professional memberships with the American Thoracic Society, and the American College of Physicians-Internal Medicine. Throughout his career, he has earned many honors and accolades, including an award as one of the Top 25 Innovators in Health. He has additionally reached a national benchmark for low-risk admissions at each of the hospitals he is affiliated with. Pulmonary medicine is the subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and management of disorders of the respiratory system, including the lungs, upper airways, thoracic cavity, and chest wall. Although most common respiratory problems are treated by general internists and other specialty physicians, internists practicing pulmonary medicine (often referred to as “pulmonologists”) are frequently called upon to help diagnose unknown disorders and assist in managing difficult, unusual, or complicated diseases of the respiratory system. Pulmonologists have expertise in structural, inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic disorders of the lung parenchyma, pleura and airways, pulmonary vascular disease and its effect on the cardiovascular system, and detection and prevention of occupational and environmental causes of lung disease. Diseases commonly evaluated and treated by pulmonologists include asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), emphysema, lung cancer, interstitial and occupational lung diseases, complex lung and pleural infections including tuberculosis, pulmonary hypertension, and cystic fibrosis. Some pulmonologists focus on sleep-disordered breathing (such as sleep apnea) and may provide diagnostic and therapeutic services in sleep laboratories. Dr. Prager is a board member of the International Board of Maritime Healthcare and partakes in philanthropic initiatives throughout the Miami area. When he is not seeing patients, he enjoys reading and writing poetry.
