Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Peter G. Liechty, who serves patients in Metairie, Louisiana.

Dr. Liechty is a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in minimally invasive surgical techniques. He uses advanced anatomy-conserving technologies and many of the world’s most minimally invasive fusion techniques, allowing for complex procedures to be done through an incision as small as 1.5 centimeters. As a result, he enjoys the immediate impact that surgical intervention can have on diseases. Currently, he serves patients at One Spine Institute in Metairie, Houma, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Originally from Southwest Michigan, he graduated from Chicago Medical School in 2002 and then went on to complete his internship in general surgery and his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. 

A Fellow of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery (FAANS) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified through the American Board of Neurological Surgery, one of the 24 certifying boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. 

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system, often by performing surgery on the brain or spine. They treat strokes, tumors, certain types of birth defects, infections, and head or spinal cord injuries.

On why he chose neurosurgery, Dr. Liechty answered, “It’s a wonderful combination of rebuilding but also a delicate precision that requires a very wide skill set. It’s a fascinating approach that gives you the ability to really impact people’s lives for the better.”
