  • Anxiety and depression?

Hi, The lump in your throat is a sign of anxiety. Nowadays anxiety and depression are considered to be going hand in hand. But maybe it helps to know that anxiety keeps mixed feelings from getting into awareness. So if you are both angry and sad or angry and loving or even angry and guilty and loving towards people around you at the same time, anxiety keeps it down. High anxiety may be experienced in getting teary eyes. I hope it helps. READ MORE

  • How often should you see a therapist for depression?

Hi, Depending on the severity of the depression, I would say no less than once a week. If it’s very severe, you may need a day program where you go to half day of therapy. Less severe, but still high up there - meet twice a week a week until you feel a bit better and then you can go down to once a week. When you are starting to terminate therapy - go down to once in two week. Best Regards, Eval Gal-Oz, PhD READ MORE

  • What is the best home remedy for stress?

The best remedies for stress are exercise and sleep. 30 minutes of moderate exercises or 15 minutes of intense exercising daily and 7-9 hours of sleep every day. It is also recommended to reduce sugar, caffein, sodium, nicotine and alcohol, add fiber, healthy fats (avocado and olive oil) and make sure that 50% of all meals are vegetables and fruit. You can try progressive muscle relaxation. It is a good remedy for stress. Google it. I hope it helps. READ MORE

  • What kind of therapy is used to treat depression?

Hi, basically almost all modalities of therapy address depression. I prefer experiential dynamic psychotherapies such as Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), or EFT (emotion focused therapy). But the the others such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) are also well known for addressing depression. I hope it helps. READ MORE

  • How do you relax when stressed?

Since the body cannot be stressed and relaxed at the same time, there is a good technique, called Progressive Muscle Relaxation, that helps you relax muscles in your body and with that stress and anxiety are managed better. You can find recordings and youtube videos that guide you through the technique of progressive muscle relaxation and hopefully that would help you to relieve stress. If stress is chronic, if you feel on-going anxiety that you find difficult to alleviate, you may need to consult a therapist and address underlying reasons for that stress. I hope it helps. • How can I get over a fear of going to a psychologist?

Hi, I suggest that you find a psychologist that is certified in ISTDP. They are trained to immediately address and help you deal with your ambivalence and with "closing up." It is difficult, but obviously there is a part of you that wants to change and have a better quality of life, and a side that is very fearful of any kind of change. I hope the healthy side wins over the battle on the will to change. READ MORE

  • Does my mother need help to get over my father's death?

Hi, If your mother after a few months of grieving is still suffering from a very low quality of life, I would suggest getting help, like you would do with any kind of illness. That does not mean "she gets over him," but gets help in processing the loss and maybe what life entails for her from now on. At first, I would suggest a psychologist, but if you think it’s severe, taking her to a psychiatrist could help her a lot. Many older adults suffer from depression and anxiety after the loss of a long-term partner. The loss is simply huge. I hope it helps. Best regards, Dr. Eval Gal-Oz READ MORE
