  • How do I manage root canal pain without access to my dentist?

The best way to limit pain on is to avoid eating on that tooth as much as possible. You can also alternate taking 800mg of ibuprofen and 500mg of Tylenol every 6 hours, this combination should help to manage pain. If this does not solve the problem then you need to go see a dentist even if it is not the one that you initially saw. READ MORE

  • Are dental implants put it under dental anesthesia?

The placement of implants can be done under a variety of different forms of anesthesia. At minimum we do local anesthesia where you the gums and the bone in the area are anesthetized. Implant placement is a minor surgery and can generally be tolerated with this form of anesthesia alone. READ MORE

  • How common is receding gums?

Receding gums is more common than most people believe. There are a lot of factors that affect the progression of gum recession. The factors that can be controlled immediately include: reducing the force of brushing - toothbrushing should be a light pressure as if you're sweeping at the tooth; using soft bristle toothbrushes - bristles should not be harder than soft or extra soft; seeing your dentist on a regular basis - this can prevent the progression of gum disease. • Can I brush my teeth with a broken tooth?

Yes you can still brush your teeth with a broken tooth; in fact it is recommended that you continue to brush as this can prevent the progression of a cavity deeper into the tooth. The tooth that is fractured may be more sensitive than the rest that is because the internal portion of the tooth may become stimulated by the movement of fluids, such as toothpaste and saliva. • Which lasts longer crowns or veneers?

From my experience a crown will last longer than a veneer. A crown covers the entire tooth where as a veneer only covers the visible aspect. Think of a veneer as a mask over the tooth, they can more easily be dislodged or fractured from normal function than the structure of a crown. READ MORE

  • Does Invisalign look natural?

Invisalign and other clear aligner orthodontic therapies are meant to be as see through as possible, however nothing is perfect. The benefit of clear aligner therapy is that you can remove the aligners (trays) whenever is necessary as compared to the fixed "traditional" braces which are cemented onto your teeth. The clear aligners generally require a bit of a learning curve to be able to speak naturally, but it is by far a more natural looking option than traditional braces. READ MORE

  • How many roots does a molar have?

Dentistry is not a perfect science and there is variation in the amount of roots with molars, however the general rule is that the upper molars have 3 roots and the lower molars have 2. These roots can become what we call fused where the 3 roots in the upper may appear to be one large root and the same can occur on the lower molars. READ MORE

  • When should pain from a tooth extraction stop?

In general after a dental surgery the majority of pain should subside after 2-3 days, however the body heals differently for everyone so pain can linger for 1 - 2 weeks depending on hygiene and other factors such as smoking and overall health. READ MORE

  • At what age can my little one start brushing her teeth on her own?

As long as you feel she is brushing adequately by herself she is welcome to begin brushing on her own. Make sure she is only using children's toothpaste. Until the age of 6 children's toothpaste is recommended due to the lower concentrations of fluoride. READ MORE

  • For small kids how frequent should dentist visits be?

After the age of 1 children should be seen at a minimum of 1 time per year, but it is recommended that they are seen every 6 months to guarantee normal development of there teeth. READ MORE

  • Why am I so exhausted after removal of infected root canal molar?

This is not uncommon so do not be alarmed. Basically your bodies immune system has directed all of its efforts to eliminating the tooth infection and thus has left your body slightly weaker than it should be. You should rebound over the next week or so, however if you do notice that your condition has not improved please seek care from your Primary Care Physician. READ MORE

  • How should I select my toothpaste?

From an oral health standpoint avoid toothpastes with any form of whitening agent, which are traditionally listed as hydrogen or carbamide peroxide within the ingredients, these can increase tooth sensitivity with long term use. Toothpastes with higher concentration of fluoride are the best for achieving optimal oral health by reducing sensitivity and preventing infection. READ MORE

  • Are electric toothbrushes any better for the teeth?

Yes electric toothbrushes are much more efficient at cleaning your teeth and gums than a traditional toothbrush. Scientifically speaking with one use of an electric toothbrush you are doing the equivalent work of a months use of a manual toothbrush. READ MORE

  • I had some bleeding in my gums while brushing. Could it be serious?

If this is the first time your gums have bled, it is unlikely that there is a serious concern. Most likely there was a build-up of some irritant in that area or lack of appropriate hygiene has increased the inflammation in that area temporarily. With appropriate brushing and flossing technique along with oral rinses of warm salt water or chlorhexidine rinse I would expect the bleeding to diminish within the next day or two. If it does persist please call your local dentist for proper examination. READ MORE

  • Is oil pulling ever recommended by dentists?

There is no scientific evidence that oil pulling is beneficial for your teeth. Although it is not backed by science or approved through the American Dental Association as an acceptable oral health remedy, I do see benefits from use of natural oils, such as coconut. Please use at your own risk though as no long term studies have been conducted to show effects of continuous use. READ MORE
