Amin J. Barakat, MD is Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Pediatric Nephrology, Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, D.C. and Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics, George Washington University School of Medicine, Washington, DC. He received his college and medical education at the American University of Beirut (AUB) AUB (BS’63 and M.D’67, pediatric residency at AUB and Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore (1966-70), and fellowship training in pediatric nephrology at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C (1970-72). He is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. He held teaching positions at AUB, Vanderbilt and Georgetown universities, and he now practices pediatrics in Falls Church, Virginia. Dr. Barakat is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the International Association of Pediatric Nephrology and many other professional associations. He has served on the editorial board of various medical journals including editor of the Section on Kidney in Systemic Diseases, International Journal of Pediatric Nephrology, member of the Editorial Board of Child Nephrology and Urology, and Reviewer for Pediatric Nephrology. He published many medical articles, book chapters, and five books, “The Kidney in Genetic Disease”, “Pediatric Nephrology: Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis”, the Arabic edition of the American Academy of Pediatrics “Caring for Your Baby and Young Child”, “Pediatric Nephrology for Primary Care”, and “Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract: Clinical Implication in Children” In 1977, Dr. Barakat described a new syndrome which now carries his name. He has received many honors including Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Ellis Island Medal of Honor registered in the Congressional Record, “Guide to America’s Top Pediatricians”, “Best Doctors in America”, Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the World.
