Throughout his academic career, Dr. Hennessy earned his medical degree from Rush Medical School in 1991, and went on to complete his residency in orthopedic surgery at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in 1996. During his residency, he developed a strong foundation in general orthopedics, which laid the groundwork for his future specialization in spinal surgery, joint replacement, and sports medicine.
Following his residency, he undertook a one-year fellowship in spinal surgery at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center and Chicago Shriners Hospital. This intensive training allowed him to further refine his skills and gain expertise in the most advanced techniques for treating spinal conditions, such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease. He also gained extensive experience in joint replacement surgery, which has become one of his areas of special interest.
In addition to his expertise in spinal surgery and joint replacement, Dr. Hennessy has a strong interest in sports medicine. He has treated athletes at all levels, from high school and college to professional sports teams, and has helped many of them return to peak performance following injury.
An authority in his field, the doctor is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and spine surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.
Professionally, he is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the Illinois State Medical Society.
