Born and raised in Lebanon, Nelly Awkar relocated to the United States after he acquired his medical degree from the Lebanese University in Beirut. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai in New York and St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in New Jersey, as well as his fellowship in Oncology and Hematology at Seton Hall University, where he served as a chief fellow in his fellowship program. Dr. Awkar is board-certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology from the American Board of Internal Medicine. He maintains active memberships with the American Medical Association, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Awkar is a highly-trained and qualified hematologist-oncologist who has been practicing for over 9 years and is currently serving patients at The Oncology Institute of Hope and Innovation in Downey, California, which he joined in 2016. Hematology is the study of blood, whereas oncology is the study of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist, like Dr. Awkar, specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention of blood diseases and cancers such as iron-deficiency anemia, hemophilia, sickle-cell disease, leukemia and lymphoma.
