Get to know Pediatrician Dr. L. Carolina Ceron-Canas, who serves patients in Jacksonville, Florida.
Dr. Ceron-Canas, a caring and compassionate pediatrician, started Ceron Pediatrics and Integrative Medicine in Jacksonville, Florida in November of 2018. She continues to work with Erica Self, ARNP, Dawn Turk, NP, as well as other wonderful providers to offer excellence in care. Her philosophy is in keeping with her background and experience in the medical field and her love of nature and all of the healing benefits it has to offer.
Her inspiration comes from her patient relationships, her own parents, and family members who offered a unique insight from the medical and agricultural perspectives. Having seen the hard work, dedication, and love that is required to maintain a relationship with patients as well as Mother Earth, she understands that there is a unique knowledge and healing that can be acquired from these experiences. This has been a driving force in continually seeking to expand her education.
Academically, Dr. Ceron-Canas began her premedical studies with a major in Biology in Hunter College. In her third year, she transferred to her birthplace, Santo Domingo, to the UNPHU – Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña, a private national school of the Dominican Republic, to join her retired parents. She obtained her medical degree in 1986 and worked one year in a family medicine clinic for the Department of Public Health in Santo Domingo to become licensed in that country. She was also involved in the UNICEF/ World Health Organizations breastfeeding campaign during the early 1980’s.
After marrying, she moved to Long Island, New York where she completed her pediatric training in 1992 at Nassau University Medical Center, an affiliate of Stony Brook University. She then went on to complete a chief residency year as a junior staff member involved in resident education and clinical research which was presented to the Nassau Pediatric Society in 1993.
That same year, she attained board-certification in pediatrics through the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.
Moving on to private practice, Dr. Ceron-Canas remained as a partner for 11 years at University Plaza Pediatrics, and continued as a clinical instructor for pediatric residents in her practice. A transfer for her husband brought her family to Jacksonville in 2004 where she partnered with Dr. Miles in Progressive Pediatrics for 14 years.
In her constant quest for knowledge, Dr. Ceron-Canas sought and obtained board certification as an International Lactation Consultant in 2004 and in Integrative and Holistic Medicine in 2010. She went on to acquire a second Integrative Medicine board certification through the American Board of Subspecialties in 2016.
Currently, she enjoys a comprehensive wellness approach to patient-centered, individualized medicine. She also shares her passion through her presentations in both the medical and public sectors where she advocates for healthy lifestyle and nutritional excellence. She has presented at Medical, Nutritional, and Breastfeeding conferences. She has been a member of the Northeast Florida Lactation Coalition since 2004.
Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends people be under pediatric care up to the age of 21. Pediatricians provide medical care to people ranging in age from newborns to young adults. They are trained to examine, diagnose, and treat children with a wide variety of injuries and illnesses through all of their developmental stages, as they grow and mature.
On a more personal note, Dr. Ceron-Canas has been married since 1987 to her beloved Atilio Canas, a pediatric endocrinologist and renowned researcher. They have 2 children, Benjamin – a spinal implant specialist & Gabriela – a marine biologist.
