Innovative Leader in Transplant Critical Care and Quality Improvement Initiatives to Enhance Patient Outcomes

An esteemed Assistant Professor of Medicine and a Transplant Critical Care Intensivist, Dr. Moreno Franco is the Chair for the Critical Care Department at Mayo Clinic Florida and Chair for Critical Care Specialty Council, Mayo Clinic Enterprise. His aim is to implement quality initiatives that focus on smart alert systems designed to prevent hospital-associated harm and dramatically improve patient experiences. His practice-driven changes reflect a dedication to enhancing overall healthcare delivery and outcomes for patients at Mayo Clinic Florida.

Throughout his academic career, he received his medical degree from the University of Panama and completed his critical care fellowship at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education. In 2023, he earned a Certificate from the Whitney MacMillan Physician Leadership Business Academy at Arizona State University's W.P. Carey School of Business.

Since joining Mayo Clinic Florida, Dr. Franco has held various leadership roles, including serving as the Medical Director of the Medical ICU from 2013 to 2016 and Medical Director for the Transplant Critical Care Service. His extensive experience is complemented by active participation in several committees, including the Clinical Practice Committee, Hospital Practice Subcommittee, and Mayo Clinic Quality Subcommittee. Additionally, Dr. Moreno Franco is involved with the Medical Emergency Response Subcommittee, ensuring a comprehensive approach to patient care and safety.

His research interests focus on critical areas such as sepsis and shock care, delirium prevention, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) management, and liver transplantation. He is also dedicated to advancing knowledge through collaborations with the Center for the Science of Healthcare Delivery, Multidisciplinary Epidemiology and Translational Research in Intensive Care and Perioperative Medicine (METRIC-PM), and the Acute Care Research Consortium (ACRC).

In his educational pursuits, Dr. Franco has actively contributed to the Quality Academy, providing training for residents, fellows, nurses, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and respiratory therapists. He also serves in the Quality Academy as the Medical Director at Mayo Clinic Florida, as well as the Associate Medical Director for the Enterprise. His commitment to education underscores his belief that well-trained healthcare professionals are vital to delivering high-quality patient care.
