Dr. Robert T. Ownbey is a pathologist practicing in Lone Tree, CO at Sky Ridge Medical Center. Dr. Ownbey started his career in Philadelphia at Drexel University College of Medicine where he practiced pathology and taught medical students and pathology residents for 16 years. He also served as Director of Autopsy Services for most of that time. Throughout his 23 year career, Dr. Ownbey has been particularly interested in gynecological pathology. He came to Colorado in 2018 to work at Rose Medical Center and then transferred to Sky Ridge Medical Center in 2022.
Dr. Ownbey was born and raised in Queens, NY before his family moved to Long Island where he also attended college. Following graduation from Eastern Virginia Medical School, he moved to Massachusetts to begin a residency program in Family Medicine. However, he found that he missed exploring the science of medicine, so, after one year, he began a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. It was after this that he began his combined anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, followed by a fellowship in surgical pathology.
Pathology is definitely my niche, and I am so grateful to have found it. Since I was a very young child, I have been interested in science while also enjoying art. I have clear memories of being 4 and 5 years old and getting very excited to look up things in my encyclopedias after seeing a science documentary. My Mother was convinced that I would be a mad scientist when I grew up. Learning about science was always very exciting for me, but I also needed to be creative, so after satisfying my curiosity, I would then go to my room to practice drawing the Flintstones.
In the world of medicine, pathology is about as close as you can get to being a scientist and still contribute to helping patients, albeit indirectly. I spend most of my time at work looking through a microscope where I am privelaged to view a whole other world that most will never get to see. Better yet, it's mostly in color, thanks to the stains we use to better visualize the tissues. Recognizing the sometimes very subtle, microscopic variations in a piece of tissue is where I believe the artsy part of the brain comes in handy. Combining this information with scientific knowledge is how we arrive at a diagnosis.
Many people have misconceptions about the role of a pathologist. The majority of pathologists are not Medical Examiners like those you seen on TV who perform forensic autopsies and study evidence to aid the police in solving crimes. Although all pathologists recieve training in these areas, a hospital pathologist is a doctor who specializes in the study of diagnosing diseases and conditions in living patients from the examination of biopsies, surgical specimens and body fluids. An accurate diagnosis is critical to your primary care doctor, surgeon or other treating physician, so that they can properly manage your condition. This is particularly important when treating different types of cancer. Of course, pathologists may also perform medical autopsies which can determine a persons cause of death and gain information about genetic conditions that may be important to the decedent's children.

“In the world of medicine, pathology is about as close as you can get to being a scientist and still contribute to helping patients, albeit indirectly. I spend most of my time looking through a microscope where I am privileged to view a whole other world that most will never get to see. I developed my interest in both science and art at a very early age. I believe that recognizing the sometimes very subtle, microscopic variations in a piece of tissue in order to diagnose disease utilizes my experience in both science and art” expressed Dr. Ownbey.

Pathology is a branch of medical science that involves the study and diagnosis of disease through the examination of surgically removed organs, tissues, bodily fluids, and in some cases, the whole body in the case of autopsies. Pathologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and management of diseases by laboratory methods. A Forensic Pathologist uses many of these skills, as well as others, to determine whether a death is accidental, criminal or natural.
Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Ownbey enjoys art such as sketching, painting (both in oil and watercolor), crafting jewelry, engaging in lapidary work, scale modeling, woodworking, playing golf, and fishing.
