He has practiced in the military including and assignment as the Chief Anesthetist at the United
States Military Academy, West Point, and the Director of Clinical Education
for Nurse Anesthesia at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. In the civilian world, he has practiced in rural hospitals as a sole provider, at major urban medical centers and now as an academic with an active clinical practice at a major trauma, and a private office-based practice.
Alongside his clinical role, he serves as a tenured Full Professor of Nursing, Director of Graduate Studies and Program Director of the Nurse Anesthetist Program at the School of Nursing, University of North Florida.
Regarding his educational background, Dr. McDonough earned his Associate of Science in Nursing degree from Greenfield Community College, and his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from St. Anselm’s College. He then went on to earn his Certificate in Nursing Anesthesia from the VA Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, followed by a Master’s degree in Adult Education and a Doctorate in Psychotherapy from Drake University.
Wanting to further his education, he completed his Master’s degree in Nurse Anesthesia at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and his Post-Master’s Certificate with a Family Nurse Practitioner Specialty at SUNY – Stony Brook. Finally, in 2013, he completed his Doctorate Habilitatus in Nursing Science and Anesthesiology at the Paracelsus Medicine University.
Serving as President of the Board of Directors of the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthesiologists, Dr. McDonough is a proud member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the District of Columbia Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the Iowa Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the District of Columbia Nurses’ Association, the Florida Nurses’ Association, and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. He is a former Diplomate and Fellow of the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists.
A frequent presenter at major conferences throughout North America and Europe, he is appointed as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Advanced Nursing Studies.
A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesiologist (CRNA) plays a crucial role in the success of a variety of medical / surgical procedures.
