    You don’t have to wait at all. It is safe to breastfeed immediately after general anesthesia. It is largely a myth that medicine from anesthesia will be present in any amount in your breast milk.     It is not the norm but it is a risk of general anesthesia. Some risk factors include being female, history of motion sickness, type of surgery, family or personal history of post-op nausea and vomiting. There are many techniques to try to prevent this.     It depends on multiple factors including length of surgery, anesthetic choice and individual characteristics. Patients are woken up immediately after surgery is complete. However, patients often don’t start to recall until they are in the recovery room perhaps 15-30min later. You will likely feel drowsy for the rest of the day. Hope that helps! READ MORE

  • Can sinus surgery be done with local anesthesia?

    Sinus surgery typically cannot be done with local. Of course that depends on the nature and extent of the procedure. If you are going into a hospital to have it done then I will assume it is something that cannot be done under local. Get to know Anesthesiologist Dr. Felicia Heath, who serves patients in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

A board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Heath is affiliated with Anesthesia Specialists of Bethlehem, PC, seeing patients at St. Luke’s University Hospital and Health Network in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and Geisinger St. Luke’s (GSL) Hospital in Orwigsburg, PA.

Formed in 1994, Anesthesia Specialists of Bethlehem, PC (ASB) provides all anesthesia care to the patients of St. Luke’s University Health Network at Bethlehem, Anderson, Monroe, Miners, Warren Campuses, and of late, Geisinger St. Luke’s, Sacred Heart, Easton, Upper Bucks and Carbon Campuses. They believe that focusing on patient care for the entire perioperative period improves patient health, safety, and satisfaction. Therefore, their mission is to provide comprehensive perioperative services, from the moment the patient is scheduled for surgery to the time that the patient is discharged from the hospital.

In the early days of her academic career, Dr. Heath earned her medical degree from the Ross University School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency in anesthesiology at the University of Connecticut, followed by her fellowship in critical care medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. 

Following her training, Dr. Heath attained board certification in anesthesiology and critical care medicine through the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) as well as became subspecialty board-certified in neurocritical care. As the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, the ABA is committed to partnering with physicians to advance lifelong learning and exceptional patient care. Its mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology. Dr. Heath now serves as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Anesthesia medical director at GSL. 

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. Anesthesiologists have a vast amount of responsibilities that include vigilant monitoring of the patient’s vital signs during surgery, managing acute pain, maintaining safety, and most importantly, acting as the patient’s advocate in the operating room. 

Outside of medicine, Dr. Heath loves to spend time with her family and work on her book, Spirit of a Hummingbird: Memories of a Childhood on the Run, set to be published this summer. She looks forward to traveling after the pandemic.
