Randall Owen provides comprehensive clinical and surgical care to neurosurgical patients under the direction of a board-certified neurosurgeon. Evaluates new and existing patients with cervical or lumbar spine issues due to disease and/or injury. Also evaluates patient having movement disorders, including Parkinson's disease, for treatment up to and including DBS surgery. Recommends patient treatments plans based on the needs of individual patients, including medications, physical therapy, up to and including surgery. Performs first assistance surgical duties to the attending neurosurgeon during surgical procedures. Provides in-patient and out-patient post-operative care following surgical procedures.

My research in neuroethics and artificial intelligence studies the inherent epistemic opacity of existing deep learning AI systems that
results in a lack of explainability having profound ethical implications in the clinical diagnosis of patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC). For example, when such systems are used to analyze neuroimaging studies in the detection of covert consciousness this opacity, combined with the unavoidable bias in the imaging data, leads to system decisions lacking evidentiary support that explains the internal decision-making process. The lack of supporting evidence makes it difficult for the neurologist to evaluate system decisions, balance contradictory information, and integrate them with other clinical data into an overall diagnosis and plan-of-care. This, in turn, may hamper the use of AI in developing a deeper understanding of the neurobiological basis of covert consciousness, leading to errors in diagnosis and treatment with resulting poor patient outcomes.
